From a dead stop, stabbing the throttle results in a clack-clack-clack noise from the rear of the truck. Anyone experience this before? I'm thinking either drive-shaft or rear axle. Truck has 115K on it.

There is no play in the drive-shaft when you grab it and turn it by hand. None what so ever. There is also no vibration at any speed which would normally indicate u-joint failure.

Please advise :)
Thanks,
Bob

My aluminum muffler heat shield was broke, hanging off slightly, and hitting shit and making the same noise. '04 Ranger fx4.... have you looked at that while you were under it?

I checked all shields. Everything is tight.

Sorry for not participating like I use to seven years ago. It's mostly me raising two young kids so free time isn't exactly on my side lol.

I am assuming the noise goes away after it loads up and you are moving? Limited slip issue? Maybe has clutch issues in the carrier. FX4 would likely have 3.55 or 3.73 limited slip if I would be a guessing. Or does that have a torsion (sp) rear end? Either way I would think carrier slipping and then catching on the one side. That is my 0.0015 cent input.

Good to hear from you James. Glad you are alive and doing well. Take care.

Well he has the STX styleside, I have the FX4 level II (which has 4.10's actually  ) and FX4 lvl 2's have the Torsen diff.

I seem to recall a TSB for these trucks that had something to do with the driveshaft. You may want to contact your local ford dealer.

I did that yesterday actually. The service guy at Airport Ford didn't seem to understand what I was talking about. Perhaps a communication issue lol.

I think it is a driveshaft issue but I don't want to start taking stuff apart and throwing time into it unless I'm sure. It's a friends truck (use to be mine). Bought from Terry.

Seems like I had that in my 03 xl ranger a while back. I had to replace the bearings and seals because of a leaking seal. After I had new gear oil in there is has went away. Not sure if that was the problem or not!?!

Stabbing the throttle from a dead stop will put strain on a transmission mount? It may be more of a clunk than a clack though.
