View Full Version : Getting some GO, needing some WHOA.

My car has developed a brake fluid leak at the proportioning valve, so I was thinking about upgrading the brakes while I'm in there. Question is, should I try and search around for a Cobra upgrade kit? If I look for actual cobra calipers I'm looking at around 300 for just the calipers, or I can get a set of powder coated Power Stop calipers, drilled and slotted rotors and pads for a GT for about the same price (or less), OR I can get reproduction Cobra calipers, drilled and slotted Cobra rotors and pads for about 400. Any thoughts?

I'm running standard replacement rotors, Hawk HPS pads, SS brake hoses, and DOT 5.1 fluid. It stops pretty good.

I've never been a huge advocate for up grading brakes until you need it. I've got drilled and slotted rotors from autozone on my car stock everything else and it stops just fine.

I bought drilled and slotted brakes off eBay. Never had an issue and they were cheap. Wouldn't hurt to look.

I've never been a huge advocate for up grading brakes until you need it. I've got drilled and slotted rotors from autozone on my car stock everything else and it stops just fine.

That's what I'm leaning towards. I found drilled and slotted rotors on Rockauto for 40 bucks a piece. Ill probably spend the extra money and get the HPS pads and SS lines.

Im talking about for the gt setup for the rotors and pads. I paid $120 for both zinc coated rotors and pads.

I would at least go 99+ dual piston calipers up front.

'99~'04 GT front rotors, are just under 11" diameter and the same year Cobra's are 13",

If you use 13" rotors you'll have to use a 17" wheel. Or do some grinding on the calipers to make them fit. Trust me I know first hand that 16" wheels wont fit.

I have 17's but I really don't want to spend the money to upgrade to cobras because they're so expensive if it's only a small difference. I think I'll look at the 99-04 GTs and just get good pads and rotors.

I know I have Cobra brakes but when I upgraded to the drilled and slotted rotors it made a world of difference in high speed braking. There's a few times if I didn't have them I probably would hit the person in front of me that either cut me off or decided to come to a sudden stop on the highway for no reason.

When I started out my dad would always say my project needed to go but it has to stop I didn't get to talk to you much at Friday night lightz wich I apologize for but it seems to me that you drive your car on the street a lot as such I would stay away from drilled/slotted and just go for the pbr upgrade drilled/slotted will build up with pad material and lessen surface area

Yeah I mainly drive on the street but I was under the impression the holes would help evacuate the dust from the pads. Didn't think they were just for racing. I might try just te calipers and pads and see if that helps then down the line when it isn't a daily driver I might try the better rotors.
Mike, I'm not worried about turning them. I know it sounds weird but I don't turn rotors anyway. I probably would on my Impala but on mustangs I've always replaced them. I know it's a waste of money but our brake lathe sucks and I've had some bad experiences having them turned elsewhere.
