Looks good. Sure are a lot of hoses on that thing.
I'm just glad I remembered where they all went. The biggest problem is making sure they don't pop off during boost.

PKFIRE

That would be cool! I tried starting it over the weekend and I either have the timing off or the couple gallons of E85 sucked up too much moisture in the last 3 1/2 months. I'll check the timing again this week.

PKFIRE

Figures, there are different flex plates that have different sensor positioning. I think I got mine right. If not I'm going to have to pull the transmission to correct it. It's a 8 hole pattern and can be rotated in 8 different ways since the hole spacing is even and there is no only one way locating pin.

PKFIRE
12-14-2016, 10:09 PM
Pulled the starter tonight and found out I did indeed mount the flex plate correctly. Apparently you can see the gap for the crank position sensor line up with the starter opening at TDC 1st cylinder. I'm so glad too since I didn't feel like pulling the transmission. I got a new coolant tube and crank sensor coming. I hope I can drive this thing soon.

PKFIRE
12-22-2016, 10:57 AM
I finally got a new crank position sensor and coolant tube. I hope both fix my issues. My car was creating spark and causing all the injectors to fire during rotation while rotating the motor with a ratchet with the ignition on after I replaced the frayed crank sensor that still ohms well but possibly was grounding out somewhere. I'm really confused about timing of spark verses the location of the rotor on the distributor. I was also weirded out that all the injectors fire as a batch. That seems inefficient to me.

Well I went and got gas and my battery didn't charge. My AutoZone special replacement alternator failed. I'll be getting a new one there tomorrow. I'm almost tempted to put a used bosch alternator in. Seems like the AutoZone ones are hit or miss from what I'm reading.

Finally have over 500 miles on the new engine. I'm running 17 psi and leaning up in upper RPMs. I'll have to retune and/or upgrade my pumps. The car is making good power on less boost.

PKFIRE
04-27-2017, 01:51 PM
50 is fair, I need to get someway of tuning it before I take it. I borrowed a ostrich 2.0 and had a guy burn me a chip last time. I want either of those two things before I make it up. Right now I would only be dynoing at 17 psi. I want to bump that up still.

I haven't updated in a bit but I'm currently in the middle of installing a 320LPH AEM intank pump. I ran the wire upgrade last night. I need to hookup a additional relay. I'm still trying to figure out how to bypass the main pump since I only need one pump now instead of two. Hopefully this fixes my lack of fuel issue. Also the car got two new wheel bearings and a ball joint. I got a 12ton press from harbor freight and already got my money's worth out of it. Now it will probably collect dust until next time.

draggin50
06-09-2017, 09:57 AM
How you like the press? Ive been thinking of getting one. I always need one (well until I have one then it will probably collect dust also).

PKFIRE
06-09-2017, 10:21 AM
I really like it! It made the job so easy. Everyone wanted 100 dollars to press the bearings in which justified the press cost. Last time I did a ball joint on the car I used a hammer and a vice. It was 100x easier to do it with the press.

I bypassed the mainpump over the weekend with M14x1.5 Banjo fitting, an8 to 1/2" barb and replaced my low pressure 12mm hose from the intank sender to the main pump under the car with 300psi fuel hose. Driving it for the first time today. So far so good.

PKFIRE
07-14-2017, 12:52 AM
I bet that car was making good power. 27 lbs of boost made a very underpowered car to decently quick car in my case. The head just doesn't flow well on these Volvo red blocks without a lot of work.

Rick93coupe
07-14-2017, 10:53 AM
Yeah it sure felt good. The heads flow really well, even untouched. It's got a borgS366, so it was making good power at that boost level.
It seems like I remember guys doing a Volvo head swap onto the 4cyl mustang because of how much better they flow. Either way, I'm betting thats a fun car that surprises a lot of people!

PKFIRE

It's the Dohc head out of B234 Volvo that they are using. I have a sohc 530 head that could be modified more but still is using stock size valves. The Volvo drag cars running 6s in 1/4 run those Dohc heads @70 psi.

PKFIRE
09-10-2017, 03:03 AM
Just a ported V+ Eaton with a 2.7 upper. With a 2.8 Upper it went 11.5@120.8 and after that I really never pushed it much further. It makes good power to redline without dropping off much. Every now and again I want to upgrade but for the streets it's plenty fast. 2011 is about the time I stopped taking it to the track. I do enjoy seeing your and other people's times with these cars. It's cool to see them still giving all these high power car new cars issues at the track.

PKFIRE
09-17-2017, 01:44 PM
So first out at the track since the build. The car ran well and I think with a 1.8 instead of 2.0 sec 60 time I should be right around a 13.5. I'm going to up the boost a couple lbs, port the exhaust manifold, intake a bit and try again. I'm hoping for under 13.5 next month.

draggin50
09-17-2017, 10:39 PM

PKFIRE
09-18-2017, 12:17 AM
It's been more of what hoped it was in high school since it's my first car. I really didn't know how to make it that fast back then, haha. I'm being told on Turbobricks my turbo is my restriction now. I was pretty maxed out on the stock turbo on my Srt-4 around 285whp on a fwd stick shift. I'm guessing this car is making 240-250 whp through an auto and rwd on a similar turbocharger. I got the intake and throttle body about done porting. I'm going to polish them this week. Next weekend I'm going pull the exhaust manifold and turbo. I'll do the same to them. I took a decent amount of material out today. I'm also running a full exhaust. Maybe I can put a dump in before the Cat.

I found some news tonight with a major boost leak that I must had for awhile. The bov/bpv is leaking a ton air into the atmosphere since it does not seal after doing a air compressor pressure test. I found one aftermarket BPV that should solve this issue. I just have to decide if I want spend money to buy it,haha.

Best of luck to you! I need to invest in a bubble flange tool, 3/16 line and fittings one of these days. They have Three different upgrades for brakes for these cars. Rx7, s60r and Ats Brembo brake caliper conversions. I just went with the rebuilds this time. It allows me to run the 15" wheels I race with.

When do you think you'll have your Mustang on the road?

NXcoupe
09-28-2017, 08:02 AM
Man, I don't know. I just finished Cam's car and now I'm working on the last 2 big projects. Hoping in october so I can have some decent weather to drive it. It's coming out with a 2.5L stroker with billet rods, cp pistons and a ported head with bigger valves, springs and turbo cam. I am anxious to drive it. But I feel guilty anytime I work on my own stuff and not the customers that are eager to drive their cars as well. Tough spot for me.

PKFIRE
09-28-2017, 09:14 AM
Hopefully you can get them taken care of soon. I'd like to see your setup. Sounds like a killer setup. I'm limited with my computer system unless I goto mega squirt. That's why I didn't upgrade my bottom end. Are those Ford 2.3 turbos MAF or Map sensor systems?

NXcoupe
09-30-2017, 09:25 AM
My car was a factory 2.3L n/a engine that has mass air. The older 2.3L turbos used a vane style meter that is like a TPS sensor in the signal it puts out. I'm using my stock electronics with a chip and pro m meter. It works really well so far.

PKFIRE
09-30-2017, 02:57 PM
That's pretty cool, the Volvo runs a MAF system. I replaced the factory 2.75" diameter one with a 3" one out of a V6 volvo. It gives more wiggle room with tuning more horsepower. I'm not 100 percent how limited I am with the stock system but most people turning under 12 second 1/4 mile end up going Megasquirt on them. I'm not sure if people have better ability to tune Megasquirt than old Volvo ECUs. Anyway it's working for me so far.

Tomorrow I'll hopefully be pulling the car out of the garage with boost leak fixed and brake fiasco taken care of.

NXcoupe
09-30-2017, 05:44 PM
Megasquirt is a stand alone system that is tunable, but it depends on which one you get and info can be hard to find to diy tune. Is an aem plugnplay available for it?

I'm not sure on the AEM. I'd have to look. Right now I haven't had a issue with my stock ECU so I haven't looked much. Every once in awhile someone suggest me to convert to a Megasquirt so that is all I know about aftermarket control system for it.

A th350 would probably be more than enough to hold 300 I'd think. Im not sure of the loss between the 350 and 400 though. Also they have different gear ratio's so that may be something to look into also.

NXcoupe
11-05-2017, 07:42 AM
350 uses less hp than a 400. A 350 will still take a lot of hp.

PKFIRE
11-05-2017, 10:02 AM
All good stuff, the 350 doesn't weigh much more than the current transmission and it looks bit smaller than the 400 so I may not have to sledgehammer the tunnel. My buddy is going to let me use his 3800 stall converter. The TurboBrick guys say you take the stall speed and deduct about 700 rpm on my motor. Right now my stall speed is 3300 which works well. I'll have the transmission in hopefully middle of the week so I can run it Saturday. The old transmission the filter was clogged and mesh was sucked in. Maybe it would still work with new fluid and filter.

I made it out Edgewater today. Today is also the first time I got on it since the transmission and alternator swap. I wasn't able to get 25 lbs of boost out of the turbo. I was right around 15-16psi Peak today. So 14.6 around 92-94 mph is what I got. In a attempt to bend the wastegate at the track to get more pretension I made it worst and dropped it to 5psi. 16.9@79 was my last past. I'll try to get it sorted out but I'm going start saving up for Mustang parts again.

I got three 14.0s today so I just decided to crank the boost back to 25psi on my last pass. Finally turned a 13 before I left the track. Another local guy wanted to see it run so I decided to today. I’m just glad nothing broke, lol. I may mess with it in the future but I’m going to focus on Mustang for a bit.

He red lighted -.092 and I had a bad reaction time .286 I believe. It was my 14.0 to his 14.3. He botched his launch which puts those cars at a disadvantage since they need to be higher rpms to be in their powerband. I have a small turbo so it boost rather quickly but runs out air up top. I wouldn’t mind a little larger turbo for it but for what it is it can accelerate to 60 pretty quick. It was a pretty good race.

Haha, if my car wasn’t shaped like a shoebox maybe it would of beat him even though he red lighted, lol. I’m trying to think what I can do to make it faster. Different Turbo or head work next. I’m curious what oversized valves with larger seats would do to it?

So I bought a Xbox and I haven’t played it much since I got an Ebay turbo to throw into Volvo. Some reason I don’t find it as fun anymore but the kids like it. I’m pretty much maxed my 20T out. I thought I would give a ebay turbo a shot to see if does any better. So here is to a 200 dollar upgrade including the 90 dollar turbo.

I have 1/4” of space between the strut tower and this. I may have to cut into the wastegate bracket if it hits. I bought a stick welder and welded for the 1st time to put a reducer and 2.5” v-band on the exhaust pipe. I need a lot more practice. It doesn’t look great but it will work. I may fix it in the spring.

Some off Brand bov I found on Amazon. Came with different spring kit. Cost more for the 1” silicon return hose than the bov, lol.

JB welded a 1” fitting to the intake pipe for bov return after the MAF to keep it from having unmetered air.

It was good meeting you also and great mph btw at the track. Your car is super clean! I’m trying to decide to pull the motor and put H beams rods in it. The cam is good to 7000 rpm which is where I have my fuel cut off set at. The Transmission shifts around 5500 which is what I let it do. Probably could drop the 60’ and shift it manually.

I’m curious if I put bigger valves in the head if it would help?

PKFIRE

So my 7th transmission is getting weak and I’m trying to decide putting a th350/th400 or 700r4 behind the current motor is worth it. I think after trying weigh the pros and cons I’ve decided to start gathering ls 6.0 and 4l80 parts for the car. First will be motor mounts and transmission mounts. I’m not huge hurry but this will be next step for the brick. I can worry cams, turbos and 8.8 rear in the future.

It’s been a great many years with the Redblock motor but moving on now. I have a Holley Terminator EFI picked out. Looks really straightforward and easy setup. Contacted Holley yesterday and you can home tune easily and you can setup for 21 of boost if you desire before you need a custom tune. Just looking at a stock setup first and maybe a cam or low boost later down the road.

I don't know who you spoke with, but that's not entirely accurate. I've sold and installed quite a few of these holley units and it is the best out there as far as aftermarket efi systems go. With that being said, what you were told is not entirely true. You will need to get into the tables and make changes to work with your combo, as there is no one size fits all tune. I help with base tunes with every unit I sell. I also offer install help with any tech questions you may have. I give sbz discounts as well.

Gong V8? no 7.3L setup? Guess if you can put a GM engine in it,I won't feel so bad if I end up picking up a 13 or 14 ZL1. Still looking for a GT500 or even a ZL1 to trade this 17 GT in on. I may have put 2500 miles on it this year. It only has 12,000 miles on it. I just have never liked the car. I may as well be driving a BMW or a Benz is how I feel when I get in it.

Yup going V8, decided to go this route instead of adapting a transmission behind the 4 cylinder. I just know that this engine fits without too much hammering. You would be very correct Joe. I prefer a more unbridled driving experience when I sit down in a Mustang. 13/14 is the happy spot between the 05-09 S197 and the S550. Just as some guys have never come to like the OHC engines and stick with push rod setups, I prefer the 05-09 and 13/14 S197's to any other out there since the Fox body went out of production in 93...SVT 03/04 Cobra is the exception.

Look forward to seeing it run next season. Should be a real head turner.

Little sentimental, today was my last voyage with the Redblock motor. This will be the first time since I was born not to have a red block powered car in the family. I wish my dad was still around when the old redblock engine pushed the brick into the 12s. He was an old Mopar, Mg and 70-80s Volvo mechanic. He ran a 13 second 318 Plymouth back in the 60s and Volvo motors were just reliable and slow transportation to him. He was utterly surprised it went 14.0 before he passed. I’ll start pulling the motor out this upcoming week.

It wasn’t too bad for what it was. I’m sure if I changed the rods and the transmission out I could pushed it a bit harder. I’ve had upped the boost and rpm before and the car was quicker that way. Problem is the Aw72 transmission in it doesn’t like being pushed as hard as I was pushing it and I didn’t trust pushing the stock rods much further. The day I ran a 12 I would add a 1psi boost and drop about a tenth of a second. Started at 20 psi and ended at 27. Called it a day when it went 12.9.

I would work on it until it’s finished if I could. I’ll probably start cleaning the engine bay Monday night and figure out what to do with AC. I’m going to remove it. I pulled out the AC unit this morning. I had to bend couple things to get the condenser out of the way. I’m pretty sure the dealership when they reinstalled the plate above it spot welded it on after a minor accident where my buddy back into my grill when we were in high school and bent it. I couldn’t pry the thing off without breaking random spot welds. Not sure why because photos I’ve seen on other Volvo’s it unbolts.

There is more room than I thought but I still need to route the cooler lines and it looks pretty tight where they need to go. I need to buy a bigger hammer since one I have is barely making a dent.

Plenty of room now? Crazy how much bigger it is than the old one.

I got TCI shifter on its way. The truck style shifter points down and so does the tci so that will fix the rest of my clearance issues I believe. This one points up and doesn’t clear even after hammering. Maybe because it’s out of a Van??

I was cracking myself up when I bought that hammer. Needed the right Engineer to figure out my clearance issue! Haha!

What turbo is that?

Yes Harbor freight press, after I got new a bearing pressed into my 03 cobra Knuckle for 50 dollars at a machine shop it was a no brainer to buy one.

Just a 130 dollar GT45 ebay special. I found some test on it. It will make 800hp and this guy below has been flogging on it for years. I had good luck with the Maxspeeding company with my last turbo. The last turbo I beat on for 3 years and it’s still tight. I’ve had Garrett and Mitsubishi turbos that needed rebuilt in less time. LS Volvo guys wanted talk me into a 7875 turbo since they’ll make more power. I can worry about that in the future.

Hard to beat that turbo for the price! Very good comparison of them all. I kinda figured that the S475 would be the one to make the power but the 1.32 made it lag on the little 4.8.

Sounds like you have a real good plan to make some power. Will be interesting to see it done and making passes! Gonna be real cool!

It’s nice having a tinker toy. A lot of things I’m doing here I would of never attempted doing to the Cobra(definitely not a LS swap, haha).
