View Full Version : Where do we start!?!?

Welp, pardon my mid spelled words I'm on my phone but here goes...
Okay, switched cold air intakes last Saturday. Went from a stock intake elbow from throttle body to maf. To a bbk set up. Car started acting crazy, sounds like a fire cracker in the intake.... Well I undid everything and re tightened to check for leaks after the maf. Didn't see anything. Issue still there.
well tonight at te track the cars doing the same shit only after I make a pass it seems worse. Taking off from a stop (normal driving) it sounds like fire crackers in te intake. No idea!
Took the SCT chip out of the computer. The car was tuned by Adam 3 years ago and since I had changed the Cam headers, upper intake and throttle body. The car ran pretty good after the changes . Well I figured maybe te CAI was the last straw. Well it still acts stupid,
Josh can chime in and say what timing went to, but it now throws a CEL.
The car is acting like the tps and the Maf are bad. Drove it from edge water to mason and the car drove it self, idling at 2k and I wouldn't have to hit the gas.
My question is, where the hell do I start, I ran a compression check not too long ago I don't think I have a bent valve. It literally ran fine before the CAI swap it was at Lebanon ford drove home and taken off. Thanks for any Help someone that knows these cars that's close to mason and wants to take a look is more than welcome, ill buy beer and food or just flat pay your. I'm absolutely lost with this one guys.

Ok, what kind of MAF do you have? Aftermarket? Sometimes atleast according to Pro-M, maf's are sensative to a change like adding an intake elbow into the inner fender, and getting rid of the stock air box.
Reason is, the air is now coming around a curve before it hits the MAF. This plays hell with them.
Vs. The stock air box or a filter on the end where the box would be, and the air being sucked straight in, no elbow before the MAF.
Also, in adding the bbk intake, did the clocking position of the maf change?
Have you tried to turn it and see if it acts differently?

I've got the same thing going on, on my GT. I have a pop out the intake at idle that got better by adding 20#'s of fuel pressure. I'm thinking it could be the fuel filter, plenty of pressure but maybe the volume of fuel is low.
Edit: I lowered the fuel pressure first and it got really bad, that was my first clue that it could be fuel related. I also tried 2 different meters.

Ive seen the old C&L mass air meters act funny and can sometimes be fixed by clocking it differently. Not sure what kind you have though. Also unhooking the battery and letting it relearn everything.

Stupid question but was the filter just cleaned and lubed? Heard quite a few times if they arent left to dry for a good period of time or if they are overlubed the oil will get on the maf and screw shit up.

Pro m meter, and the filter is dry

The set up before was a moroso elbo into the fender mas air and then stick intake tube, injust had to change it because of the hole in the intake tube from the nitrous. What do you mean by clocking it? Ill have to try a few things after work and see what I can narrow out of the picture

If your maf meter isn't a 4 bolt flange style, you can loosen the hose clamps and rotate the maf metern I think you want to rotate the top of ot just towards the engine. Perhaps 1 or 2 o clock position and see if that helps.
When I sent my maf meter to pro m for recalibration they specifically asked me if it had an elbow before the maf meter.
You have have to get your meter recalibrated if it doesn't act any better.
But you're sying you had an elbow in front of the maf before the change as well?

I had a similar issue Kevin but I never changed anything on mine just fired it up one day and it was acting like that I tried everything known to man changed tps you name it finally i just unplugged the TPS and worked fine. Now I know that's not the ultimate solution but it worked

Yea it had a cold air, the only thing that changed is the material the cold air was made out of lol, it went from plastic and rubber to a bbk complete kit.

The base timing was set @ 17* for some reason. Every tuned 5.0 car ive ever had my hands on the timing is set @ 10* and the advance curve and amount of total is controlled with the chip. I think the tps is way outta range, the fpr is bad and the distributor may even be bad.

A few things to check ->
TPS voltage (does it rise steadily with no issues as you open the throttle) What's the voltage at Idle ?
Fuel Pressure (38-42Lbs approx at idle with vac disconnected)
Fuel filter
TFI Module
Stock or aftermarket distributor ?

Have you tried contacting Adam yet? I did "about" the same thing and I turned the maf wrong and it caused it to run lean as hell.

No, it's such a cluster fuck under there right now, and it's been years since it was tuned he's gonna want it again to tune it. And if my plans work it will be getting a turbo over winter so I don't wanna tune it right bow

Be sure and update if you figure it out. I haven't had time to mess with mine.
I verified balancer ring hadn't slipped, new plugs, wires, cap, rotor, checked fuel pressure at the rail, new TPS. Only thing I think I have left is fuel filter and salt and pepper harness behind the intake.

Well spark plugs are fine, the mass air looks kind of dirty? Not real sure. As soon as it starts idling fine and you put any pressure on the gas pedal it starts to run like shot like its bogging out.

Well up date... Check engine light is stuck on. not sure why? Mass air appears to be good. Car will now drive completely normal once it gets warmed up. There is still a pop when you cold start it and kinda give it a load. a good amount of hesitation in the pedal as well. after 5 minutes its fine. While driving normal any gear if you rail it, it goes Stupid first gear just makes noise and feels like it wants to go but something is off. in 5th at 40 mph the pedal goes to the floor and it just starts lagging BAD then the intake pop comes back for a second then it drives fine again..........

Mass air is 100 percent good, is there a way to test a FP regulator? That seems to be the only thing I can think of, it doesn't seem to want to move either way when you turn te dial. Anyone got one for sale
