85 GT turbo street car build

Well I bought this and I wasn't sure what way I was gonna go with it or if I had even planned on keeping it but it turns out that Im going to put it together. Its not gonna be anything fancy but Id rather keep it fairly streetable and be able to enjoy it. It was set up to run the XOS races last year in Xtreme 8.5 and did well with the 363 and the 76mm turbo. Went a best of 5.63@125 in that trim. At the end of the year we stepped back up to the 88mm Turbonetics and went a 5.44@134 and coasted thru the quarter in the 8.40 range. For those that have seen this car, it has about the cheapest shit suspension wise as possible on it and it will hook in the mud! It has Lakewoods with coil overs up front and Competition Engineering 3 ways in the back with some factory springs, Some weight jacker lowers and double adjustable uppers.
I will be running the Turbonetics 88mm now with the air/water on a 347 set up that I just picked up. It consists of a Dart Iron Eagle block, Eagle crank and rods with Diamond pistons, small .560ish hydraulic roller cam, Brodix Track 1 heads that are ported on the intake side, and a Super Victor EFI intake. It came with the Trick Flow box intake and 90mm TB with Precision 95lb injectors but Ill be swapping to the Victor EFI so I can run the elbow and air/water still. A powerglide with PTC converter will be behind it all. Here is pictures and Ill keep you posted on how its coming along!

Thanks everyone! I love the old car. It gets a lot of looks when it gets up on the bumper and everyone see's it's nothing special. The wheels, cage, and hood are what gives it away. We ran in it the street car shoot out last fall and won with it it made the drive flawlessly. Should be about as fast I'd think and if not I can swap the cam for a solid roller.

Glad to see your keeping it, it's a great looking car with a lot of other good parts on it! You can change the suspension later but he'll it's obviously working. I'd put that money elsewhere.

I totally understand I have a 347 but am wanting a 4 bolt block so I can throw the power to it........

You can get the SHP block a little cheaper and its 4 bolt on the middle 3. The boss block is pretty cheap as well (around 1800) but talking to Barker, he said don't go with it. But I know both Jeff Jenks and Jeff Lange have made awesome power with them and they have held up. The only issue with them is that the piston comes out of the bore to far on the 3.4" stroke and they rock.

The rear end is stock width and its not mini tubbed. It is a 10 inch wide wheel and I think they are 6 inch bs.

If I remember right I think they are about $1200 a wheel for the double beadlock. They are bad ass though!

Well Im gonna stick it out in the 85 and the Cobra. The 93 is nice but there is video of it at Georgia getting into the wall so it isn't as clean as I originally thought. Ill be a lot happier with what I have anyways.

Yeah its from Somerset. He always has nice stuff and the car is still beautiful but its been wrecked... Does it take away from it? In my book it does. The one video of it on Youtube doesn't show it hit the wall. Someone covered the lens before it hits. But on Ustream it shows it all and says the guys name who owned it previously.

Yeah it wasn't bad at all. Looks like it may have tapped the rear quarter also. And what really turned me off on it was the fact that I asked and he told me it was perfect, all original paint, never wrecked, clean carfax and title. He knew it had been put in the wall. If he couldn't be honest about that little mishap, what else would he hide? A mans word is all he's got!

Yeah the 85 worked great for what it is. It was very friendly on the street and made great power with the 88 so it made for a fun car. I think power was just over 1000 to wheels with the 88. Even if its 700 to the wheels now with the new motor, Ill be happy. Atleast for a little while!

Picked up some new parts today for this. MSD distributor, solid mounts, and my bolts. Hope to get the motor bolted together and sitting in there soon. Cant wait!!!

Im still pounding at this one as well. Picked up the 120lb injectors and a Weldon regulator. Its coming together slowly. Should be getting some stuff cleaned up under the hood this weekend and then it will be going together. Cant wait to see how it runs!!

Yeah I always liked this car when Raz had it. Hope it runs as good. This motor is smaller displacement, has a hydraulic roller cam with a lot less lift, but the heads are a little better I think. Same 88mm turbo though so it should make it run good.

No not anything going on here lately! It's been to damn cold to do anything. I'm ready to get the engine off the stand and bolt it all together and get it put in. From there it's all down hill!!

I did get the new steering rack in, new UPR bump steer kit on, and a few other little thing. I'm hoping to have it out mid April.

1 step forward, 2 steps back!!! I sat the motor in the car and I noticed the valve covers I have wont work. Looks like Ill be buying a new set. The breather on the passenger side hits the intercooler piping. Also while doing this I broke a blade off the electric fan... My luck!

Pulled the motor back out and put the flywheel on and went to bolt up the tranny and I pulled the converter out and the input shaft came out. Went to put it back in and I broke the input shaft rings. Called Autozone and Advanced and they didn't have a clue what I was talking about. The boy at Autozone asked me what a powerglide was!! Anyways, here is some pictures!

No, Im not running a vacuum pump. Raz didn't run one on the old motor either. Im not sure how much it will affect it or if I need to.

The reason I ask is that you already have the bungs on the front of the V/C's to run to a vented catch can, why not just plug the hole where the breather element is?

plug the vent and run each front fitting to a vented can . or just buy a new bare set and do 16an line to 2 catch cans . turbo cars like to breath

Every time I turn around, I run into a snag! The block plate I had was for a 164 tooth flexplate. Called jegs and got it the next day. Got everything bolted together today and set in the car. Now the motor mounts don't work. They don't set down flush into the k member and they are bottomed out in the slots. Never fails!

I'm going to pull the motor mounts off and see about swapping them left to right. I'm sure they are in correct but that's my only option before I call and order a different set.

Sitting in car. Cant really see the drivers side mount but there is a gap about an inch. Piping lines up with the TB though.

Went back out and I slotted the motor mount holes on both sides and got it a little bit better. Still not good enough and the motor is sitting a little crooked. Im gonna try to order another set of mounts and see what happens... Here is what it looks like now.

The passenger side header will also not line up with the bracket for the turbo. I kinda figured it would be off some and I can cut it off and move it where ever.

Made a little bit of progress. Ground the slots in the K member and used the Jegs mounts and it finally sat down in. Its still off just a little but I can get it to work.

Mounted the vacuum can. Now to make and run lines.

Installed all of the turbo kit. Its not completely bolted up but I have ran into a few issues there also. If its not one thing, its 3 others...

Well I finally dug this back out of the corner, loaded up, and dropped off at Gary Rohe Race Cars today. After all the trouble I had with the motor mounts, I found the original mounts in the back floor board... My luck!

But anyways, Gary will be finishing everything up and I should have a running car soon. Cant wait to drive it on the trailer and get it back home!

I found the original mounts that it had on it before. I ended up buying 2 sets so Ill have a set for sale now!

Gary will be swapping the mounts, redoing the whole fuel system, installing the wastegate and blow off valve, manual boost controller, and pretty much looking everything over and fixing it all. I just don't have the time any more to do it all myself.

Went down to Gary's yesterday and got to see some of his work on this. Its getting close to being running and should be done next week. Cant wait to get it back! He has finished up a lot of the small things on it and fixed some of the hillbilly shit on it! No more diamond plate spacer!!!

I had Gary do some work on my 85 GT Convertible a few years back, it turned out good as well. Congratulations on getting it back.
I will have mine finished up this year as well and ready for next spring, can't wait for the cruise ins and cruises.

Gary changed the motor mounts and got the engine sitting in right due to my mount issues that I had. I found the original mounts in the back floor when I loaded up so that would've saved me a headache! He fixed the crossover pipe, put on a starter and alternator, redone the fuel system and moved it up, redone the tranny cooler lines, made me a new intake spacer, installed the distributor and plug wires, put on the wastegate and blow off valve and ran the vacuum lines, put on new rotors, and a few other odds and ends. He made a few brackets to get the rigged up stuff off as well! I dropped it off in pieces and I picked it up running! Cant beat it!!

Best bet is to buy one turnkey!! It's so much easier and cheaper! I've got a good bit wrapped up in this one and still have a bunch of little things to take care of.

Im going to try to get some stuff done to this over the weekend. I need to fix my oil leak, and small odds and ends. I may have to pull the piping out of the car to fix a crack. Im sure that will be a pain in the ass! It looks like its cracked up by the firewall inside the car.

Thanks! If its like any of my others, it will just go up for sale. We'll see how it goes. I have been having more fun in my Cobra than any race car Ive owned. I like hopping in turning on the AC and driving! And selling this may free up some money to buy some parts for it.
