Looking to learn how to build a 302 correctly, so with that said, I will pay 150 (what the shop wants) to rebuild my stock long block 302. I want to go to the shop, and watch and learn, but it is impractical. So anyone who knows what they are doing want to make $$$ and teach me? This will take place sometime in jan. Ill give specific detail when i find out.

For just the short block assembly, and not needing parts they quoted me about 170 for a 302. This is monarch machine shop in florence ky

Btw adam this is cory the random guy that calls and ask questions but never makes an appt. I'm waiting on some cash flow. Decided to go ahead and get a good trans instead of an upgraded stocker.

$150 seems Really Cheap !!!
I don't know if I would trust them at that price ...

Even though its just the short block? I don't need parts are anything.

If you are doing a rebuild you need parts. Main bearings, rod bearings, cam bearings, piston rings, freeze plugs, gaskets, oil pump, etc for starters. Not to mention machining. $150 sounds way too cheap for it to be quality work.

Most "REPUTABLE" shops are going to ne $300 + for just assembly of a short block ... Just for labor ...
Just my $.02 !!!

Maybe he's getting a good deal? Some places still offer those occasionally but I will agree that it's getting pretty rare.

Here's the problem, you are not only wanting assembly, but you're also wanting someone to teach you their profession. Anyone on here that's gone to an automotive school to learn something like this can tell you it's not cheap.
I wouldn't mind helping you out, but I won't re ring a stock shortblock. I don't think it results in a quality engine. Your cylinders aren't straight and are oversized, and your pistons are also undersized resulting in a ton of clearance. Not a good recipe for success. I'd go to the place you found and see what they do. Not many places will work with all stock stuff. jmho.
And remember, anyone can bolt stuff together, that's not assembling an engine. Doing it correctly requires a lot of expensive tools and the knowledge to use them and then the knowledge of what needs to be done when a measurement is not within spec.
Bring your block up and I'll check the bores for free for you. best I can do. then you can swing by and talk to Adam on the way home.

Ok, maybe I should have put this first.... I have had the block deglazed and bores checked, magna fluxed... rods checked... Heads milled and checked 3 angle valve job and I am getting new springs/piston rings/bearings. Pistons were checked as well, also had cam bearings and new plugs installed. The bores I was told were standard bore still and still have the cross hatching. I'm not looking or someone to " teach" me ( guess that was a bad word to use) but just let me watch so I can confirm that I know what I "think" i know pretty much. Haha if that makes sense.

Went to the shop today, they said because its just a stock rebuild its 175. If I had new rods and and such it would be about 400 or so.

Stock long block turbo brosef, till next winter going 351w im not looking for more than 600rwhp. Street build/ occasional track days. plus im doing the trans before hand. Probably going with a tko 600 then do the mmr 900 mod

If your 302 block doesn't split in half at 600 rwhp, it wont be long before it does. Catastrophic failure is in your future. You might want to rethink this.

600rwhp from a 351w, not the 302.

I would just wait and do the 351. I had 180 bucks in just bearings and gaskets for my 351 truck rebuild. If your going for the 351 just save your money and built that instead of wasting time on a 302.

Well here is the thing all i need for the 302 is rings, bearings, and cam gear and put it together. I already have the turbo kit modifying that right now is out of the budget. I'm putting this 302 together, with a turbo and a tko 600 hopefully getting 400rwhp until next winter, then upgrading to 351w. i can build it on the stand while i have fun in my car.:bounce:

a 50oz imbalance engine with 420ish crank hp wont hold together very long. On top of having stock internals.
Some people have good luck with the stock block holding to 500 wheel, but its only a matter of time before you have two 4 cylinder blocks.

Stop being a girl. I have built and tuned a shit ton of 500+whp stock short block turbo cars that are still alive and beaten regularly. You are flirting with disaster but who cares it is a stock short block. Keep the rpm down with a good tune and it SHOULD live. I would drop it off at the shop and call it a day.

Its being balanced, and if i can't hold 400rwhp, then ill buy a 4 banger that can lol. I mean come on, seriously, every time i hear "its gonna split' the numbers get lower, first it was 550hp then it was 500hp now is 400 lmao. Ill take a hammer to it when my other engine is done and tell everyone it split at 1 pound.

Ok, so I need some votes here, I did some numbers and if I went 351w right now it would cost me about 8k rounding up with some room, but in the long run save me about 1400-1500 cause i wouldn't have to do shit twice. But this route it would take till beginning of july til its completely finished (built, tuned, trans, and rolling).
Or keep doing the 302 stock long block for 5400 and finish it beginning of may (tune trans and rolling). And build the 351w on the side next winter.
My delimma is i want to enjoy the car while the weather is nice, and people are out and cruising. What do you guys think?

Buy a junkyard Explorer 302, put halfway decent valve springs and a stock Mustang HO cam in it with your turbo..... run that while saving $$ for your 351 build.

True about the LS motor. My current car has a bone stock motor with only a cam and exhaust and makes over 400rwhp. If I still owned my old cobra it would probably have a LS motor in it by now too.

As adam said, the stock block max hp numbers aren't etched in stone. Rpm is the real killer coupled with detonation.
As for your plan, get the 302 together and learn on that. Then slowly build your windsor over tiime as u get the cash. You mentioned the money you'd save well you'll save a bunch in cc interest taking your time. Jmho.
