Noisy rear, I know this car had been beat on a bit before I got it (90 Mustang GT). Sounds almost like a hum/road noise more than a whine to it. It is loud and constant though. Going to put new axle bearings in it for sure. Not really sure what to visually inspect for while looking at the differential. Check the pinion bearing for play, stress cracks in the ring???? Any GOOD advice would be appreciated!!! :bigthumb

Look for shiney, sharp teeth on the pinion and ring. Well, they'll always be shiney after a while, but I mean heat marks and stuff are easier to see there... wear pattern is preferred to be towards the middle surface of the teeth, if it's towards the end of the teeth then that could be where some of it's coming from. Sharp teeth edges come from the contact pattern being too far and wearing the teeth edge.

Stangman, I'm getting familiar with gear boxes at work. Think I have a diagram somewhere that sort of describes what you are talking about, as far as where the gears are contacting.
Pegasus, not sure on the gear ratio. P.O had no idea, may be some 3.73's as it does has a few basic mods done to it.
bbf, noise is there at all times except from maybe 0-10 mph. At highway speed which I tested out this morning was constant all the way to 65-70. Did not seem to be as loud, but may have just been me getting use to it at a constant speed. Occasionally it has a snap/crack sort of sound. Thinking maybe the clutches in the diff. are toasted and maybe everything else around it. Warm weather this weekend will give me a chance to open her up and see whats inside. I do not think it is the axle bearings, it is more of a whine than a hum/howl.

Got this dropped out a few days ago. Every bearing in the dang thing is shot, gears are shiny and burnt looking. Picked up another rear with all good internals, it's suppose to have some suck 2.73's in it but as long as it's quite I'll deal with it for now.

You want to get rid of the old rear end?

Funny guy maverick!!! Will be a little easier to keep the foot out of the pedal this way, that is true. Andrew, think I'm going to hang on to this one and rebuild it. Kind of learn the ropes and keep it as a spare. I'll let you know if I want to move it down the road.
