I will try to explain the problem to the best of my ability.
Background: 89 shortblock, tfs1 cam, edelbrock rpm air gap dual plane intake, Quick Fuel 600 cfm vacuum secondaries carb, new duraspark dizzy, msd6al2 ignition, t5 trans.

The timing is set at 16* initial and 36* total. I have changed springs so the timing curve comes in fairly quickly, total timing around 2800rpms. Carb was brand new (still learning about tuning a carb).

The car drives well under hard acceleration, but not during normal driving conditions. The car falls on its face when you take off easy from a stop sign type situation and doesn't want to accelerate until you give it 3/4 throttle, then it comes on strong.

Also does not want to cruise at a steady speed with steady throttle at lower rpms (under 3k rpms). But it likes to be over 3k rpms and more throttle. I'm still learning a lot with this build, but I'm stumped. I've played with the timing, messed with when the secondaries open, etc. I want to be able to drive the car 50+ miles without fighting it. Any help or guidance is greatly appreciated.

Does it have a properly operating choke?

Weak coil?

Too much fuel in primaries?

have you set the floats and idle mixture even though its new it has to be done
does it idle good?

Sounds like it could be a power valve or possibly an accelerator pump, is the carb used or new?

New MSD coil, electric choke is hooked up. I have adjusted the floats to mid way in the bowls. Car idles well. Carb is brand new, I thought it was a power valve too, I couldn't find a hole in it, but I changed it anyways. Accelerator pump seems to squirt fuel into the primaries as soon as the throttle is touched.

Probably really lean on the primaries and/or idle circuit. Also probably needs a little adjusting on the accelerator pumps as well. :bigthumb

I was also thinking a long the same line as this. ^

Thanks, now if it would only stop snowing so I can get in the garage!
