View Full Version : New not building boost, someone that knows vortechs help.

I'm starting a new thread because the issues stated in the other thread are now null and void. Tonight, we took the bov and intercooler out of the equation and hooked the vortech up how it's supposed to be. Directly to the tb with its bypass valve hooked to the discharge tube for recirculating air. However it still made no boost. Anyone, have any ideas where a vacuum leak would be now. Or better yet, would anyone with good knowledge of the vortech be willing to come look at it?

Is the impeller even spinning?

Yes, the sc emits a whine that can be heard over my loud ass exhaust.

After talking to you on the phone last night I did some reading. Some people running an underdrive pulley set were having similar issues. I'm not saying thas the problem but something to think about. I could hear the frustration in your voice over the phone. Hopefully you can figure it out quick and get it back on the road.

Dumb question......you are actually driving the car and under a load when not seeing boost ? Not just free revving or blipping the throttle with the car stationary or not in gear ?

Actually driving the car under load.

Yeah, vortech told me I would lose a little boost running the udp's but I can't see losing all 9lbs.

Where do you have your boost gauge hooked up to?

When you say under load you're full throttle letting the rpms climb?

How can you run underdrive pullies on a blower? Aren't any changes going to affect impeller speed and therefore boost?

Not sure. I don't know anything about that style blower. Just relaying what I found on a Google search. Sounds like some guys had a smaller crank pulley. I read where a guy put either a #7 or a 7lb pulley on and got about 8lbs of boost.

I'm going to be changing out the udp's this weekend and see what happens. But yes I was going full throttle while driving. Evilgt my brother tee'd the boost gauge into a line on the backside of the manifold, not sure what it goes to but I can take pic when I go over next and show.

For reference, a buddies setup stopped building boost.....he didn't know there was a belt drive inside. Thinking he was gonna spend $2500 on a blower rebuild....it was only a $50 belt.

Oh yeah, this happened over a year ago. He only decided to finally fix it as he's moving to TX next month for a new job.

Vortechs don't use rubber bands, it's a gear drive type system.
What is your crank pulley diameter and the diameter of the blower pulley? There should be a boost per blower speed reference sheet somewhere. Take crank pulley diameter, divide it by blower pulley diameter and multiply that by your engine rpm. That will give you your blower rpm. It's possible you are not spinning the blower fast enough to build boost.

my last setup i had a vortech supercharger and i had to take off the UDP

He did say that the blower was screaming louder than his exhaust... its gotta be spinning sufficiently.
Based on some quick google searching, under driven crank pulleys can be up to 32% under driven. That's a big difference in blower speed. It's still spinning but it's not moving as much air. It's likely just pushing enough air to satisfy the engine cfm. Barring there being huge leaks somewhere, my hunch is it's not spinning fast enough.

Yeah it's most likely the culprit

I haven't found my stock pullies and I've gotten called in to work on my last few days off, so I haven't had time to get into. But I should have it done soon. Sucks not having my car, but I can't refuse the hours right now at work.
