View Full Version : Selling On Ebay
More Mad at myself on this one!!
I sold my old Corvair on eBay last week, the first winner did not pay, so I did a second chance offer to the next bidder, he accepted for $1000.00, he sends me a deposit via Paypal for $500.00, I check my account it is for $485.20, then he sends the second $500.00, again $485.20! So at this point I am down $29.60 at this point!
Then I find out the "second chance offer" cost me $60.00 on top of the original $18.60 to start this whole deal.
So I learned a valuable lesson by losing $108.90 on a $1000.00 sale read all the fine print for eBay and Paypal :D

I used to sell a ton of crap on eBay but the fees have got out of hand. It works out to about 15% give or take. It depends on the price of items sold but eBay is 10-12% then Paypal is like 3.5 now I think. What really pissed me off was when eBay starting taking their fee out of your shipping charge too. I understand that they did it because people were listing items at cheaper prices with much higher shipping price to dodge some of the fee but it ended up screwing honest sellers who only try to charge actual shipping cost.

Don't buy much on ebay any more. Most items I find on there can be had for the same price locally in a lot of cases with regard to electronics. Closed my Paypal account several years ago after being hysted. Paypal caught the fraud charge, corrected it and then accessed me a service fee for doing so. And I found out you can't close a Paypal acount apparently. Try as I have all I can do is strip all CC information from it to make it unusable. Have never been able to find a menu selection anywhere on that account to close the account altogether.
Never sold anything on Ebay. But the surcharges explain a lot as to why the deals aren't there any more like they used to be.

15% in fees is pretty standard for auctions but I rarely buy anything on there anymore. The biggest thing I hate is being forced to use Paypal when selling.

I use the shit out of ebay, mostly buying but I do occasionally clean house and sell stuff. The fees to me seem high but where else can u reach so many people, if its car parts I'll usually try forums first then go to ebay. If it weren't for ebay I probably would never have been able to start my business ten years ago. Some of our specialty tools for doing electrical work run close to 10k each for a crimper or battery tester. I can pick the same shit up on ebay in near new condition for a fraction of that.

That must be some battery tester and crimper.

Inthknk things generally sell for a little more on EBay since there are so many retailers on there now.

They can be pretty pricey, a full set of Cementex tools alone can hit 5k. I can pick em up pretty much new for less than 1k. I can also get electrical part for pennies on the dollar and more importantly the sellers have them in hand with no lead time for manufacturing.

Gotcha. You are talking a full blown tooled setup. Thought you were talking only about a single pair of crimpers. I've never seen a $5000.00 dollar crimping tool, but I only work with up to 480 3P and never get into the big stuff. Most of my stuff is trouble shooting and not installation work. I have never worked with power lines of HV above 23700.

I do DC low voltage normally neg 48v , normally in the telecom field. The voltages are low, amperage can get fairly high but with DC the cable has to be bigger to transport it. We work up to 750 mcm typically and use either a Burndy PAT750 for lugs up to 750 and small h taps then move up to a Husky 3610 to do larger Htaps up to 750/750. The customers usually require specific tools that are industry standards and they normally have to be calibrated/certified annually.
