View Full Version : Shell price markups...

Pulled into the Shell Station at Route 4 and Northland Blvd yesterday to fill up after seeing their $2.24 per gallon for unleaded. Started to fill with 93 and saw the price at $3.04. That's a .80 price jack. Frickin robbery! This is the second Shell station I have seen doing this. The last one I stopped at on Mason Montgomery near Fields Ertle had done the same thing with price spans from octane to octane. 10-20 cents is about the limit in my book.

So I pumped $5.00 into the tank looking like a poor piece of white trash seeking to spend the other half of his last ten dollars on scratch offs and a pack of generics and headed to another place (NOT SHELL) for fuel.

I've been a fan of Shell for years but have stopped short of their product due to being higher priced overall, but the diff between 87,89, and 93 is crack head stupid!

So is this the norm for Shell stations now or was this just coincidence I have gone to two consecutive shell stations and seen that kind of mark up? Either way I won't return to one again. Once bitten twice shy.

It's everywhere I've been. I fill cars up when I sell them, and the BP next to the dealership is 80-90 cents higher for 93. Anything with an SRT badge gets 93, so yeah. And I have to run 93 in the jeep, since our gas in Georgetown is so bad. Anything less and my valves rattle. I feel your pain.

More and more cars require 91+ so it's easy profit. If you have a smart phone and don't have the gas buddy app then get it. Sorry Chad it isn't available for the stove tablet operating system. :)

I'm running Mobil UDF 93. Still 10-20 cents kick per octane level.

Speedway seems to consistently be 20 cents between grades. Most BP stations seems to be the worst.

UDF changed away from Mobil a while ago, did they switch back?

Than again I haven't bought gas in two years :)

My little CRX requires 89 with current tuning, likely I'll be pulling 2 degrees base timing to run 87 for a cross country trip.

Look online before leaving the house. When I was driving 80k-100k miles a year I always looked for the cheapest gas along my route. Just stay away from Speedway gas.

Kroger in Fairfield is 2.05/2.20/2.35, I'll find out who their supplier is.

Chad393 and I both filled up with 93 at the Shell when we headed down on friday. He popped a head gasket and mine was pinging under load. I'm done with Shell myself. My car runs great on Speedway 93.

Still Mobil to the best of my knowledge.

I don't know who does UDF, but back when I did the Yukon fuel pump (see prior rantings), when I drained the 30 gallon tank, it had 28 gallons of UDF 87, which was about 2.5-3 gallons of water. The 93 is probably as bad. Hence my 4 angry squirrels pinging under load.

I thought I heard something about Shell being the suspected culprit to that head gasket issue Friday night. I know there was a problem with them getting junk gas years ago at the Rte 4 location @ Crescentville Rd location. That one was on TV but that has been a decade or more.

Mista bone - I appreciate you looking into that but I am not in that area of town. I was just over in that area doing some running. Thanks for the offer however.

Most all gas station (except for Kroger) have jumped to a 20 cents per grade split in the last month or 2. But BP's and Shell's seem to go above and beyond that for 93.

UDF dropped Mobil in 2011....when at the time was the best gas (for me) for MPG other than pure gas/boat gas.

http://www.bizjournals.com/cincinnati/print-edition/2011/06/17/udf-might-drop-10-year-deal-with-mobil.html

Just stay away from cheap ass Speedway, the "points" are not worth it. Stranded three times with stuck compression rings. The issues cleared up once I switched gas stations. yes stupid Hondas but the Trans Am did it as well. Cap of ATF was the old cure.

All the gas is the same...it comes from the same pipeline(s). The only difference between one brand or another is the detergent package they add to it.

Idk why shell would be an issue unless the tank have junk in them all shell comes out of Dayton buckeye or cincy buckeye on river road.I guess they could have an octane issue if someone didn't drop the right product in the correct tank(it does happen)

This is the same sort bullshit the airline carriers pulled when they all imposed baggage fees. I predict all the gas retailers will eventually follow suit. It is not market driven, it is simply greed. Did you hear about the hedge fund manager that bought a drug company recently and raised the price of an AIDS medication from $13.50 a pill to $750? When asked why he raised the price so dramatically, he said because he could.

And we find ourselves in agreement again. I concur. They are doing this simply because they can. Nothing to do with demand IMO. And you are likely right. It is only a matter of time before others see people still willing to pay 80 cents more a gallon for premium and will jack their prices as well.

ive noticed this a lot at BP and shell. I went to krogers today and premium was 20 cents more. looks like I will go there from now on

I think shell started it when they introduce V Power which was an addtional 3-5 cents over the normal markup.

Exactly like they did/do with diesel. Greed. Pay more for a less refined fuel. That makes perfect sense.

Yea, for years the Shell station in Milford was 10 cents between grades. That stopped a couple of years ago and it went to like 20 to 30 cents between grades, or more.
They advertise a nice price for regular, but stick it to you for the better stuff. I have a tuner with tunes for 87, 89 and 93 octane-all performance tunes. my '06 GT seems to run great on 87 octane, so I'm staying with it.
Now, funny thing is that that Shell station just changed over to Gulf, which I understand isn't all that great of a fuel. I liked Shell because it is a Top Tier fuel, along with BP and Exon. The Shell station at Rt. 28 and Guinea Pike just closed up a week or so ago. No idea what's going on there, or if they will reopen under another brand. I have always thought the best gas was Chevron, but they have moved out of this area.

I'm all about Kroger's. 30 cents between reg and premium. And Sam's club as well. I've gotten premium there before too.

I drove to three different stations to get 93 for a decent price last week. I saved 5 dollars by doing so. Crazy because all three stations had 87 for 2.049.

Kroger has now joined the rest. $2.49 for premium today when regular was $2.09.

That is true, but the additive package is what's important

I have switched from Shell to BP. I do want to stay with a Top Tier fuel and BP stations are a lot easier to find these days. Shell seems to be slowly moving out of this area. Strangely, Gulf seems to be moving in, and just recently Gulf is sporting the Top Tier badge.
