View Full Version : My 97 Cobra

I decided to start a project thread about my 97 Cobra. I got this car because I traded an 89 vert that I had started working on and had actually put quite a bit of work into thanks to Mike Bell. After driving it around for a few I decided that I'm really not a fan of convertibles. I put it up for sale and ended up trading for the Cobra. It's a 97 with all the documentation to go with it. It has a cat back exhaust, 4.10s and eibech sport line springs. Thats pretty much how I got it. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/c7f4fc629a9f6c29ccd1e3aab53fe73b.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/48e1afb26a844f5ac4dc710dbdb0e39c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/465c30f01327e20d70b2d80dd922a6ff.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/345a04dfc29c5e77bb43308b131f4f5c.jpg

Since getting the car I have picked up a few parts and traded off the 17 inch fr500s. The wheels make the car now in my opinion. The bronze on green looks awesome. The car currently has black leather seats but are in rough shape. The factory ones are supposed to tan so luck would have it I found a set locally. All they need is a good cleaning and conditioning. Cold air and tb should help out in the hp department some. Along with the 1/2 inch smaller crank pulley. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/df4527382f25646b860ce3bf81f4cb53.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/738ea72b85405573ba0f80daaa776981.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/2b5c44d6632cfeb82db1ed2f7a1c6b04.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/8e1e8ff46caa012800a5752c065cd9a3.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/90aeeb3b878e7b4136c6109f38b5556c.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/e8fdc647c7fa959543e3079f5ab9729d.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/f8ab0e02192f8ff47e52268d622d8e8a.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/4a480219bbe968514f4d13c6e9d08fb0.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191208/d9a81b49a64f256db1c00d6d4263971a.jpg

As of now the plan is to replace the euro taillights that are on the car with factory ones. New head lights. Needs a front bumper cover due to a tear on the passenger side. I also want to put a stock style hood on the car. Whether its a factory cobra hood or the fiberglass one HO Fibertrends makes. I'm just a fan of the scoops on the hood. I think they make these sn cobras stand out.

It has an sct tuner with it. Not sure who did the current tune but it definitely wouldn't hurt to see where we are at. As for the seats. Just gotta clean the tan seats up and swap them out. Need the windows tinted also. Not a fan of the fish bowl look lol

You could put some black seats in there. It already has the tan/black two tone going on. You'd have to swap the seat belts to black as well to really make it look right though.

I bought the correct tan seats for it. They just need cleaned from being in storage for several years.

Detailers tip for cleaning leather. Pick up one of these brushes. I use a mix of Purple Power with a nice squeeze of Blue Dawn dish soap and water. About 50/50 with the water and purple power. This brush is amazing. It will get those tan seats looking like new. Afterwards, use your favorite conditioner.
These brushes work great on plastic panels too.

No problem bud. I found out about these a year ago. My Carbrite dealer turned me on to them. He had to show me up to sell me on them. LoL Took a car off the lot I thought I had the leather as clean as it could get. He took one of those brushes and did a small circle and you could see a big difference.

So I finished up a few projects. Painted a set of stock taillights to replace the horrible euro taillights that were in the car when I bought it. Plus I hit the plate panel. So, as nxcoupe said there was a bit of an issue getting an antenna and cover for the car. When i got the car all it had was the exposed antenna base. So took a trip to pull and pay. Got a cover and an antenna and figured it would be an easy fix. Nope. After fighting with the cover for a few minutes i decided to pull base completely off the car. Turned out someone had put one off an F150 on the car. So back to pull and pay. Found every thing i needed. 3 screws and 30 seconds and tada lolhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200112/c1f19b983db50f1385ec1378b28e54f6.jpg

Sucks about the hood. I feel ya on the cold thing too, it needs to be in the very high 30s or in the 40s for me to get out there, my garage isn't insulated too well and I only have a propane heater so if I try and do anything when it's colder I'm going through some serious propane just to try and keep it comfortable to work.

So, I had a few things planned for today. None of them got completed lol. The little progress I did manage was short lived and I discovered some ridiculous nonsense. So i pulled the bumper cover off. It didn't need much help. It had 1 push pin holding the bottom on and 2 zip ties. Thats it. Im surprised it hadn't fallen off honestly. So the new to the car cover is on. I bought some push pins (or whatever they are called) to hold tge bottom in place and the 2 that go in the grill area. I need the hardware that goes in the fender wells still. Next on the list was the coolant overflow tank. Apparently, the tabs on the stock one had broken at some point. So they used epoxy to put them back on. Not to mention the wrong hardware to fasten it to the car. So. I will be taking a trip to pull and pay this week with a list that seems to keep growing. I will never understand why people don't take the time and do things correctly the first time. It makes life much easier. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200301/5badff601b5f05ce3f4ea9e157f3f530.jpg

Trying to accomplish something this weekend. The hood latch assembly and prop rod I picked up came off a black car. So I had to make it match. Pulled the air intake off. Plan was to get the new throttle body and cold air on today. Found out the battery is dead and the parts are in the trunk. Only way to open the trunk is with the remote. Dead battery means truck wont open. After getting all the plastic out of the way. I can see someone clearly didn't know how to put on spark plug wires. One more thing to sort out and clean up lol
Now to charge the battery and hopefully knock this out today.https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200329/10befa90a25b7b844bab78742d027a53.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200329/eb039974e133de82d41b45e090bc6e55.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200329/edf3936d93fa1fb807b901aa02464e2d.jpg

This is one of those live and learn moments. The bumper cover I bought for the car, although in good shape. Someone had cut the posts that mount the side of the bumper to the fender. I wont make the mistake of not paying attention to that again lol. So another trip to the salvage yard where I picked these up to replace the cut ones. Drilled out the rivets now i just need to pick up some hardware to mount them. Then i can reinstall the bumper cover and have it fully secured. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200408/b44cb3fdd0f2f523afbc27b991963ab8.jpghttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200408/b981cb4ee1360e90bd64e79c14da6607.jpg

Couple surprises from the wife showed up today. Thanks to her the hood is mounted and I really dig the hood struts. She ordered the chrome cap for the radiator overflow also. While you are up front cleaning up the grille/rad area- if the 99-04 hood latches work on the 94-98 cars, you could swap it out to lose the plastic neon yellow hood release.
They went to a yellow vinyl/platsidip type coating over a piece of metal on the later SN95 cars, which you can just slice with a razor to remove and be left with a nice clean black all-metal hood release mechanism that doesn't scream "LOOK AT ME! I'M THE HOOD RELEASE!"

Finally got around to swapping the pictail on harness so the washer bottle motor will actually work. While doing that I realized that this car didn't have a horn. Hold onto those old dual note horns if you have em. Ford is delivering lots of new models with a wimpy single note horn.
I upgraded the horns on my Cobra to freeway blasters (which were slightly louder, but not much) and I will be putting the Mustang's OEM horns on one of our newer Fords with the crappy single horn.
