thats what its all about brother!
Big thanks to Rob for the scrap metal. Now I can get some stuff accomplished this weekend!
Rob is one cool MOFO, he ranks right up there with that Big Cracka that works at Cincy!!
Just for the record: Im PWI...I got a Bud Light (yuuck) and Jim Beam Black/wiskey sour in front of me. So dont judge my language ass holes!
To start, Ive been kinda depressed because I feel like Im not getting anywhere on this thing. Everyone is out with there cars racing UMTR and all that shit and my pile is still on jackstands and I dont know where half of the bolts, nuts, fastners, and clips are for this whore! I feel like Im moving backwards. I keep finding rust and shit to fix...Maybe Im just a perfectionist. I want everything to be show car perfect...and its hard to do. But at least Im working on it instead of letting it be a mouse house in the corner like the past three years...lol! I keep remembering Vinny telling me..."I dont care if you wipe it off, check
the air in the tires or whatever, just go do something to it Johnson!"
Finally, I feel like we are getting somewhere though. I feel like were making progress and I may be able to start doing body work this century. Id like to have it painted by my birthday (May 31st) before the summer heat gets here.
So here is what we've been up to...
Still battling the rust in the framerails. Heres what Ive started with and what Ive taken out.

Big thanks to my good friend Rob Lewis at Rigid Race cars for hooking me up with some metal stock to fix this rusty mess. And to think I thought was working with a rust free car.
We sand blasted all the rust out and I spot welded in some metal tubing to keep the framerails from collapsing when I tighten down the K-member bolts. I painted the entire inside of the fraimrails with Chassis Saver sealent paint and Schaber and I welded in 1/8" steel plate over the holes we made...

Now we just gotta finish filling in all the holes in the firewall and add the two big ass panels to the inner fender area in front of the strut towers and its time to paint the roll cage! I cant wait to squirt some paint on this whore!:bigthumb
what do yall think???
Hey Matt, those pieces of tubing wasn't from my Huffy, was they? LOL
Looks good man, keep it up.
That looks good Bro, keep workin it will be done in no time!!:bigthumb
Lookin great Matt, now I know what Im doing the next time the motor is out.
That surgery pretty much sucked, I'm still hurting. I would have rather kept the damn teeth in. Once Matt gets back to sanding, then I will be right back down there, right now, he's doing work that's way over my head. He should be ready this week to get back to my area of experience, until then I'm scared to touch anything.
Looking good there home Skillet!! Ya knows ya gots my number... I could possible help out with something... getting beer if nothing else!!
CORONA for the thirsty welder....PLEASE!
That's true...My motor is still MIA...I have a shitload of parts waiting to be put on..No motor...I was told the motor would be done this past Saturday...Umm no motor...So don't get down guy...I am hoping to hit the next UMTR at e2o but I'm not holding my breath...
I feel your pain. I just hope to get mine to the street sometime this year. Seems like I save a little and spend a little. Hell at this point I'd be happy to get 4 tires on the ground. You'll get there it just takes time. The biggest thing I've found to help is to not set a deadline to get it done. It seems like I always get discouraged when the car is never ready when I hope. On this car I just keep telling myself it will be done when it is done.
I'm not there yet either, we all feel your pain Matt!:(
I'm another, in the "not ready" camp. Hopefully soon! :o
Matt, sure look'n good so far.
They are working me to death at the salt mine, but I 'spect it'll slow down soon, and I will come visit with refreshments, assistance, and encouragement.
I still want that big ass clock I saw on here the other day for my Garage.
DUDE!!!????!!?!?! I had no idea you were back on this bitch. Let me know where you are working on it at and I will be glad to come out and give a hand. I get in to that sort of thing. Right now we are trying to finish my mom and dad's basement to live in for a month or three because we sold our condo. But I would love to lend a helping have if needed. I think you told me once were the car was (Cold Spring area) just not sure where at on that road? I'm sure I could find it thou. BTW don't get down on your self it will be worth it in the long run. My Dad, my brother-in-law and me panted my sisters car back in high school and I thing it took us 6 months but she was right when she was done.:bigthumb
Welp, I spent another $240 at the paint supply joint today. I got some good epoxy primer for my bumper covers and ground effects. I also picked up a product called "thin ice" its a body filler specially made for glazing in little problem areas on plastic body parts. like the damn liscense plate screw holes on my GT nose. I got some way over priced wax & grease remover, a case of red scotch brite pads, some more HOK medium reducer and some adhesion promoter. I think Im gonna take back the reducer though. I have three gallons and that seems like waaay too much. I shouldnt need more than 2 gallons, and at $50 a gal. I dont need extra materials sitting in the closet. D:
Greg and Kris, you guys are gonna hafta stop down to check out my progress and have a brew! Travis' garage is on Murnan road in Cold Spring across from Campbell Co. Auto Body. Its down past where you go over the AA highway.
Its easy to get to, give me a holla one day and I'll give ya directions. :bigthumb
Send me a pm with your digits and let me know when you are working on it.
Im beat.
I got a looooot done in the past two days. I havent filled that many holes since that one time on spring break! lol.
Engine compartment is almost done. Here the pics.
I was gonna buy some pre cut and bended inner fender panels and just weld them in, but I decided to do it myself. It took a little more time, but the gratification of doing it all yourself is worth it! I started by using poster board as templets so I could get the panels just right.

drivers side inner fender panel welded in...
http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL366.../250867637.jpg
Being a GT, the car came with power windows, locks, and mirrors. Im removing all of that and putting in manual window regulators. So I decided to fill in the holes in the body that the harness travels through to get to the doors...

http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL366.../250867771.jpg
We also filled in the fresh air vent from the cowl since this car will be without a heater box. Heres Schaber doing a little Overhead MIG work...

Since I wont be running winshield wipers Ive decided to fill in the hole in the cowl where the wiper motor arm sticks through.
http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL366.../250867715.jpg
I also had a small rust hole on the drivers side floor board, right about where the heel of your foot would be when on the gas pedal.
http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL366.../250867809.jpg
I just cut it out and bent up a new piece and welded it in...

http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL366.../250867832.jpg
There were also a shit load of round holes with rubber plugs in them in the floor. I guess Ford didnt want Mustangs to float. I also filled them in...I want this bitch to float by God!

http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL366.../250867849.jpg
Every time I take a step back and look at this thing I get worried that I may be in over my head...
http://pic40.picturetrail.com/VOL366.../250867540.jpg
Its just parts...It may take forever, but I'll get it back together eventually.
If I put in a few more hours under the welding helmet tomorrow I may be ready to paint my cage this week sometime. I cant wait to play with my new paint gun!
lookin good, thats a ton of work
Keep at it dude, it will eventully get there.:bigthumb
Just make sure to open the welding curtin so I can see in...
Good Job Matt, and keep up the good work buddy. :bigthumb
Kyle
Looking good Bro!!!!:bigthumb
Today I vacuumed out the interior, blew it out with a blow gun, and vacuumed it again and wiped everything down with Lacquer Thinner soaked rags. Nick Middleton came over and helped out too. We started painting my patch panels with a coat of Chassis Saver to keep the surface rust off them. Nick had the great Idea to just cover all the floor boards and inner firewall. We put a heavy coat on and went to dinner. I came back and put on another coat for good measure.
Hopefully It will be good and dry tomorrow so I can scuff and put my first coat of epoxy primer on the roll cage.
I cant wait to break out my new paint gun and pop its cherry!:bounce:
I'll have some pics tomorrow evening. Stay tuned!
Post up those pics.
I changed the Tstat, still runs hot while going down the road. Come to a stop sign, it goes back to the middle of the gauge.
I dunno, hopefully it gets me threw a few rounds tomorrow.:)
After a good 12 hour day I got the roll cage in primer. Most of the way...
The HoK KD2000 Epoxy primer is a two part primer that is mixed 4 to 1. I mixed 12 oz. primer and 3 oz. activator to give me 15 oz. I used both my Devillbis Finishline guns (the full size gun with th 1.8 fluid tip and the smaller 1.0 touch up gun). 15 oz. wasnt enough to cover the entire cage with one good coat but I stopped there because I was getting pretty frustrated. I cant seem to get my gun set up right. The shit is pretty thick and it wouldnt come out of the gun unless I had the fluid knob all the way open, then the shit would just run out of the tip. I was getting pretty mad, but I ended up getting it to spray a little bit and did what I could. The shit was coming outa the gun like undercoating or rhino liner stuff...nasty.
Heres everything masked up and wiped off ready to go...

Heres where I tried forever to get the gun set right.

This is as far as I got...

Ive read up and it looks like Im doing everything correctly to get the spray pattern set right, but I just cant get it right. The tech manual did say you can reduce it up to 10 percent. Maybe I need to try adding reducer to improve flow out. I dunno.
Hopefully I can get some help and finish it tomorrow.
Looking good Matt
So this is why I didn't see you two tonight??? Looks good though.
Sorry Carl,
We really did plan on coming. I started with this just after noon yesterday and once I got going I pretty much was committed to it. I couldnt just walk off with a gun full of primer. I didnt get finished till allmost 11pm. Jen wasnt going to go without me because she didnt even know where it was. Sorry again bro.
I talked to a buddy last night and found out that I need to reduce that stuff to get it to spray right. HoK says up to 10 percent, my buddy said I can reduce it farther if need be to get it to spray right.
Im gonna give it another shot today. ;)
Looking good man and yeah on all that primer you can reduce pretty much as much as you want! Me and dad normaly reduce it out till it just starts to get thinner then it sprays pretty good!
Well, I gave it another shot today and it turned out beautiful!
I sanded down what I had done yesterday and cleaned everything off very well. I mixed up 20 oz. of Primer with 5 oz. of Activator and 1.5 oz. of Medium Reducer. It had a nice thiner consistency to it compared to yesterday. I got the gun set up pretty easily and laid out 3 coats in no time.
Heres my little paint table with my gun stand and some of my stuff.
I dont have a funnel or anything to get the primer out of that gallon jug without making a mess, so I just put some masking tape around the rim to make a spout. worked pretty well...

It was a major PITA getting into all those tight spots around all those bars. The interior of that thing is like a jungle gym!
