    Pinto Progess Thread

Since there are so many people who havn't seen this car at all, I'll just start from the begininning. It started like this. Its a 1980 Pinto with 25k original miles. We wanted to start with a virgin. Nothing like taking a virgin and really reaming on her. The goal of the car is to basically make a street legal drag car.

Ford 9" rear end. Its a Currie unit. Nodular iron 3rd member. 1/4" wall axle tubes. Its got brackets welded on it for a 4 link setup, anti-roll bar, wheelie bars, shock mounts, and locator bar mount.

4 link setup with wishbone locator.

    Mocking up anti-roll bar.

Rear end all completed and painted with Por15.

Engine setup. Its a Ford "2.3" liter. Some might be familiar with Fords tall deck blocks. Thats what we have. Its a 2.7 liter in its current state, o-ringed, scat crank, crower billet rods, weisco pistons, all custom built to our specs. The head is an Essengler ARCA head, with their .620 lift turbo cam. Solid lifters, big valves, etc.

We decided to go with an external wet sump oiling system. The header is an equal length and equal degree of bending withing 0.25" and 15 degrees on every runner. The intake is a unit designed to be 2.5 times the engine displacement.

    cam trigger wheel and sensor.

5 gallon fuel cell. Twin sump, weldon prefilter, pump, and post filter.

Motor plate/bellhousin adapter plate. We have the plate drilled and tapped to fit a lakewood bellhousing that is a scattershiteld all in one.

We had to enlarge the diameter of the wheel wells for the larger tires.

A few pics of the rear stance.

Whew, that took a long time.

Man there's not much "Ford" left on that 2.3! That poor little Pinto didn't know what hit it. I'd love to have an engine like that in a Mustang coupe.

Just out of curiosity what is your target hp/weight goal. BTW keep up the good work that is going to be a really cool car when it is done.

We originally set for a 2500 lb weighty target, but from the way the cage spiraled out of control, to almost a tube frame back halfed car, we think it might be a bit over that, maybe 2700.

The hp we're expecting to hit is 800 hp to the wheels. The turbo pictured is a T70, which we're using as our "break-in" turbo, then we'll be stepping up to a larger turbo once we get the car mostly dialed in. I think the first year will be mostly a learning curve as far as getting the 4 link dialed in and the car launching straight. Then we can worry about putting more power down.

Wow that is a cool project. I thought Huber performance wheel standing 4 banger stang was cool but this is way over board. From what I read those tall deck blocks are getting hard to find and expensive to buy. I did read that there is the possibility of Indy Cylinder Head casting some blocks to replace them.
