the only mustangs that ever came with Forged pistons and or truck were the 4.6 lightning the 03-04 Cobra and the new GT500 and GT500KR If anyone tries to tell you other wise they are full of crap. I have 3 books about the ENITRE history of the mustang and those were the only model years to come from the facotry with forged pistons there have never been a 5.0 the came stock with forged pistons....hope this helps
You Sir, have absolutely lost your mind! I believe most of the foxbodys all had forged pistons all the way up until 91 or 93 I cant remember forsure. Some of them came out from the factory with trw forged flatops. I'm not real sure on what years exactly but with a little research I could probably find out.
I'm not cocky, I'm just faster than you!
87 through 91 had factory forged.
92 - 95 hyperneutectic
ok well apparently someone knows more than I do or read something different than I did SO I would love to see that on paper
Look it up in your books.
Starting in '85 when the Mustang 302 got a roller cam, all Mustang 302s had forged pistons up until '91 or whenever it was that they started using hypereutectic pistons. Prior to '84 they were cast, probably all the way back to the early '70s. I can't really comment on truck engines or other 302s as i don't/haven't worked on them enough to say for sure, but i'm absolutely possitive that at the very least, '85-89 absolutely got forged pistons...i just don't recall what year the hypers came in.
I don't know about getting it on paper, i thought this was pretty much common knowledge. But, here's a piece from the Mustang GT registry commenting on the switch to forged in '85:
While the Turbo GT was discontinued in 1985, the four-barrel 5.0L V-8 was upgraded once again. After Ford had promised, but not delivered, more horsepower for the 1984 GT, they finally came through by harnessing 35 additional horses for the 1985 GT 5.0L - pushing it up to 210 horsepower. 1985 GT engine The GT had finally topped the golden 200 horsepower mark! To accomplish this feat, a number of enhancements were made to the 302 HO (still topped by the 600 cfm Holley 4V with dual snorkel 460 air cleaner) including the addition of a racing-style roller lifter camshaft, stainless steel tubular exhaust manifolds and forged 8.4:1 pistons (replacing sandcast pistons) with thinner, lightweight rings to further reduce friction. Of course, these changes necessitated a revised block and heads to accept the taller roller lifters. Exhaust restriction was reduced by splitting the exhaust pipe behind the catalytic converter and adding dual mufflers and tailpipes. Automatics still came only with the lower performance 302 HO and throttle body fuel injection, even though horsepower was upgraded to 180 hp early in the model year.
However, they also note that it had a 600cfm Holley when it was really a 575cfm, so i don't know how reliable their info is. But alas, if you really feel the need i will find you further proof
I forgot, here's the link to the registry page i quoted from http://www.mustanggt.org/85gt.htm

I wasn't doubting what was said but the books i read had no mention of it in there that why that sounded odd to me but thanks for the info. I am no expert but like i said I only know what I have read.
Thanx alot guys now all I need is a decent forged piston short block.
To my knowledge, 86-92 were forged, maybe previously, but not sure. 1986 5.0 h.o's were flat top, 93's and later including explorer's were hyper's. As far as 4.6 stuff, who cares, I mean, i dunno.

^ I could be wrong about the '92.
'85 is forged for sure, i've done a lot of research on that one since that's what i've got.

Some one find me a usable short block please. Hahaha
What do you wanna do with it? The hyper pistons aren't bad as long as you're running an all motor setup. Once you spray or force induction then you're asking for it. I personally would prefer forged no matter what, but a lot of guys run production Explorer 302s deep into the 12s and they've got hypers in'em.
