I did some sniper training and details when I was in the Army and that's pretty much what most snipers use. It's a fantastic gun!!!!!!! Nail driver at 1000 yards for sure. I personally perfer the .308 round. During training we actually got to shoot some different rounds like the 30-06 and the .308 didnt deflect as much going through glass such as a window etc. Also the 700's are fairly easy to do some custom work on. Floating the barrel etc. I prefer a wood stock but there are many nice synthetic choices available. If I were going to only have one rifle it would be this one or an A4 chambered in .308

I don't have anything against Remington but I have a Savage 116 in a 30-06 and I love it. It has the Accu-Trigger which is kinda cool. It's fun for a big gun but I really like my .223 AR-15. I have always heard the actions on the 700 models are 2nd to none. I like Savage because it is a little cheaper than a Remington. I bet that sniper training was pretty interesting Pitbull always was interested in how they train those guys.

Lots and lots of putting rounds down range, some tactics and learning how to move.

Friend of mine has two 700's. One synthetic stock 308 and one wood stock 22-250. Cant go wrong with the 700.
FYI. Pretty much all new 700's come with free floated barrels. Badass.

I bought this one in .308 off of a guy who needed some quick money a few years back. http://www.remington.com/products/fi...l-700-vls.aspx
Scope, bipod, and 200 rounds of ammo came with it.

I'm not an expert shot by any means, but it's very accurate. I'd hate to carry it around for very long though. The bull barrel makes it very heavy.

I have a 700 in .308, heavy barrel, laminate stock, 1lb. Jewell trigger. Very fun gun. The Savages are good also, Remington came out with their adjustable trigger to compete with the accu-trigger. 93 hulk had a 700 that we adjusted the trigger to 2.5lbs, but there are mods to the accu-trigger to make it lighter also. The .308 and 30-06 shoot the same bullet (.30 caliber), but the 30-06 is obviously a longer cartridge w/more powder. The .308 will have the most availibility of ammo.

just bc they seem to be more popular rounds and this year the kids in the 4h club will be stepping up and away from the .22cals and the club already has a 30-06 and a 308 they can use Im going to use it for coyots and target shooting

If it's primary use is to train kids and varmint hunt, then my vote goes for a 700 with a synthetic stock, sporter barrel in .223. That way they get a good intro into centerfire, you would have plenty of power for critters, and ammo would be cheap and plentiful.

17 HMR is another good alternative. You can get a cheap Savage 17 HMR for around $225.

For the caliber I would go with .308 ammo is a hair cheaper.
The 700 is a great gun but I would go with a Tikka.

If you are looking for a TOP OF THE LINE RIFLE look up Encore Thompson/Center. Im sure you will be in aww with these firearms. I have a rifle made by them in .243. This gun is so versitile that you can change a few screws and go from rifle to hand gun to shotgun. you will deff have to check out the site.

7mm mag, sys stock and SS barrel with a leopoud scope. Its hard to kill a deer under 75yards due to the bullet not opening up. Have dropped deer dead at 500 yards with this gun. Awesome gun but probably got over 2 grand in it.
