Actually it has been tested and minimum octane rating for E70 (winter blend you are referring to) is 105 octane, and E85 in summer blend format is closer to 107-109 octane. I wasn't aware of the fact that E85 was "dirty" like diesel fuel is. Yes it does require a lot more voume to flow E85, and I have to admit maybe its only in boosted applications that E85 pays off? I am unsure about a N/A car. I personally know of a car that picked up as much as 100hp (roughly 70 more at peak) in the curve just by switching from 100 cotane to E85 (same boost of 21psi).
