He doesn't change combos like changing underwear the way I do.

Changing things a bit. Making a panel to mount under the dash to house the new Holley system. I'm trying to figure out a way to make it fairly accessible without having to pull the dash pad off the frame in the future.

Thanks Ken.

Been working on it as time allows, how's yours coming along?

Greg and I worked on the car today, shifter is buttoned up as well as a bunch of small stuff. I made a new plate that holds the Holley ECM and it's bolted to the dash bar of the cage. Been spending a lot of time playing with the Holley software, this thing is slick! Changed the old rear end pinion flange over to the 1350 Strange unit which was more of a pain in the butt than I figured but it's done. Measured and placed the order for a Chromemoly driveshaft online. Got some 1/8" NPT quick fittings for the Meth installed as well as a feed from the turbo to the wastegate.

I also ended up moving the starter solenoid to where the factory ecm was and it's wired. Filled the motor with oil and primed the pump. I kicked the starter over the other night, which was a cool feeling. Getting close!

very slow. It coming though. I have the whole undercarriage done, finally got all the rust out, and got everything painted. Got most of the suspension together, finally picked up the rearend and trying to get it together. Need to figure out a couple of other things and get some stuff to the powdercoater pretty soon, to get it back on the ground.

Slow going, working on small things. Zimmers has my overflow tank and I sent my new EFI harness out to be modified, it's not back yet. PST 3" chromoly D/S with strange slip yoke arrived yesterday and I got it installed. Hoping my harness will be in next week, It's damn near ready to fire.

Finally received my modified Holley harness back. I was going to do this one like I did the Accel harness but after figuring up the cost associated with doing it with these materials, It was the same cost but there was no time involved. That being said I just got it back 30 min ago and I'm pretty excited about the way it turned out.

Thanks. :bigthumb

Been getting lots done on the car. All the basics are hardwired to my relay panels, need to find a -10 female plug to close off one of the feeds in my fuel cells sump, so I can put fuel in it and test for leaks.

Put switched power to the Holley last night for the first time so I could do a firmware update and set the TPS. Playing with the software when it's connected to the ECM is a lot more fun. Here's a screen shot of the gauges.

Still having to sort out a radiator fill, with the radiator tucked under the core support like it is, there was no room for a fill. Need to get that sorted out so I can fill it up.

It's getting close!:coo1:

Thanks, It's been a long time coming, I'm wishing I didn't have to work today so I could tweak on it some more. After that vid I changed a couple of things and we started it up again and it ran for about 5 min. This thing puts out a lot of heat, pretty sure I'm going to need a turbo blanket and to wrap the down pipe if its going to be able to idle without overheating. I had a vacuum cap I threw on an old water line that decided to let go at 200 degrees and that gave me a hot shower, lol.
I'm just glad everything worked exactly like it should have, that was the first time I timed a motor before it fired up, so I learned a few things there. When I plugged the injectors in and it stumbled to fire, I knew it was going to run!

Does the Dominator have the self tuning mode?

We used a HP system on a TT 383, and it was pretty spot on. The more we ran it, the better the idle and transitions got. We put the car on the dyno, and pulled a little fuel out of it, just to clean it up some under WOT. I would not have considered the self tuning, as being worth anything on anything but a crate motor, but I was really impressed.

Now on to ibstrokin, I don't think Scott has chimed into this post at all. I'm half tempted to go through all 53 pages, just to be sure. Sounds like everyone else, but you...(conveniently), has a real good idea of who I am talking about.

Yes it will self tune to a degree, the key is knowing where to start with your fuel and timing tables. I was trying to comand a 14:1 AFR at idle and it was having a tough time idling. My motor seems to like around 13:1 at idle. The hunting is gone and I got around 850-900 rpm idle now, I also took some timing out of it and its ready for a test drive tomorrow.

Got a little more seat time tonight. Was able to see a little over 5#'s of boost too. I've got a small leak (first one ever) on a set of solid core rubber impregnated gaskets. I think I might try a set of those felpros with the steel sleeves. At first I thought the rear main might have been leaking, so I dodged that bullet for now.

If anyone decides to go the manual brake route, I can't say enough good stuff about the setup I ended up with. It's PBR front calipers off of a 02 GT and 98 explorer rear disc. Maximum motorsports manual brake conversion. The brakes slow the car down phenomenally and parts are readily available.

I got it out today and saw 11.6#'s. IAT's were great and it pulls like a freight train. I need to get out on the highway, these backroads get scary at the speeds I'm seeing! :D

Copilot needed.

Thanks guys, I tied the transbreak into the Holley 2 step the other day, so I was playing with that and freaked the wife out. I've got it set real low just to make sure it works.
That was my first 3 gear burnout and it was smooth as butter so yeah, to say I'm giddy is an understatement!
I still need to pick up another harness or two, so the car is prewired for anything I decide to do in the future, then I can button up the interior.

I forgot to post up the picture of a plate that Rick Terry made for me. You guys might remember where I use a green lee punch to make holes for the DFI setup, well my new Mil spec plug flange was smaller than the hole in the firewall. Rick made this out of SS so I could rivet it to the firewall and then fasten the plug to the firewall permanently. Turned out really nice. One electrical connection to remove everything for the motor is nice.

Nice day yesterday, had the car out working on the tune. I've been gradually adding timing and it's a completely different animal. I don't think I'll put it on a dyno till spring but street tuning is probably about finished. It runs and drives pretty damn good.

Well, I took the car for it's longest drive so far. Drove it out to Centerville for an alignment. It was only about a 25 mile round trip but I was nervous nevertheless. Pretty much went off without a hitch although it did stall once and my tiny battery had me nervous. I have made a ton of 4-5 mile drives around town and only had one problem the day that rocker stud pulled out. That being said I'm pretty damn pleased with how it's turned out. I need to pick up two more wiring harnesses so I have plenty of additional inputs and outputs for the future, once that's wired I can finally put the dash back in. I also picked up a set of black tweed seats, I know they're nothing special but I'm liking the look.

Not much been happening lately. I worked up a cold startup tune in the 40's but didn't bother any colder than that. Let's face it, it's a fair weather car.
I'd like to go ahead and buy the meth and boost solenoids and have them wired up, the boost comes on so fast it's pretty violent and I really don't have any timing in it yet. I've kept it relatively low because I'm on pump and haven't added the meth yet. I am looking forward to making a few shake down passes to see what it does, still need to pick up some belts and a fire suit too.
So ready for spring!

Picked up some new harnesses for the car and almost have it prewired for anything I'll need in the future. Just waiting on some Metri-PAC connectors and I'll be done for awhile.

Tonight I made some panels for the center console. I honestly don't need this switch panel anymore but I can use it for switched input triggers or something. The momentary switch is going to trigger the data logger.

Rick93coupe

When they come down on the pin they lock into place. You then push down on the center section to release them. I bought the ones with the key so I could physically lock them if I ever wanted to leave the car out somewhere.

A locked hood is a scary thing....should you have a fire.

Yeah I've had the conversation a lot, I only wanted to be able to lock it if I had to leave it somewhere over night, or some odd circumstance you don't think of. They will always be unlocked if I'm out driving the car, for that reason. Because of where my radiator is mounted, I had to remove all the factory cable/latch mechanism, so there literally was no way to keep someone out from under the hood without it. Of coarse all someone would have to do is break a window to pop any other hood but I'd say that's a deterrent in itself.

Here's the install of the hood pins. I got started on it this evening, didn't take much time but I'll need to make or have a spacer made for the under side of the hood. Where the quick latch mechanism comes through, it isn't flat on the underside, so the retaining ring isn't able to hold the main body in place.

The instructions have you place the pins and raise them all the way up.

http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o238/Rick88coupe/photo4_zps2cf0d697.jpg (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/Rick88coupe/media/photo4_zps2cf0d697.jpg.html)

You place a piece of tape on the underside of the hood where the pin makes contact.

http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o238/Rick88coupe/Mobile%20Uploads/photo1_zps87e34d73.jpg (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/Rick88coupe/media/Mobile%20Uploads/photo1_zps87e34d73.jpg.html)

You then drill a pilot hole from underneath, followed by the 1-5/8" hole from the top.

http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o238/Rick88coupe/Mobile%20Uploads/photo2_zps003791a3.jpg (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/Rick88coupe/media/Mobile%20Uploads/photo2_zps003791a3.jpg.html)

That was honestly pretty damn scary but I knew no matter what, that it could be fixed, so the hell with it.

Here it is with the holes cut and no tape.

http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o238/Rick88coupe/Mobile%20Uploads/photo3_zpsb04a58fc.jpg (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/Rick88coupe/media/Mobile%20Uploads/photo3_zpsb04a58fc.jpg.html)

I then installed the latches themselves.

http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o238/Rick88coupe/photo2_zps05de8c9a.jpg (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/Rick88coupe/media/photo2_zps05de8c9a.jpg.html)

Here's what it looks like mostly finished. They just need secured from the bottom with the retaining ring I was talking about.

Sorry man but thank you. I've been really busy with work and haven't had much time to get on here. The car is broken like I told you at the meet. When I tore it down I found out that the ring gaps weren't set up for a power adder combo. Way too tight and the second ring gaps were tighter than the tops which was the old school way of doing things. It was only a matter of time before I had lots of problems. I had just wired up the boost solenoids and was about to start upping the boost. Luckily the only real damage was one piston but instead of putting a replacement in it, I opted to buy a better designed piston for what I'm doing. Block and crank were checked and they are fine, I just need to have the head checked for bent valves, fingers crossed there. I hope to start putting it back together in the next couple of weeks, most of the parts are here.

These pistons were a shelf 4032 JE SRP. Most people I've talked to say the piston would have lived for awhile but the ring gaps were going to kill it.

I haven't updated the thread in a long time. I had the block checked and it's fine, crank barely needed polished but it was and is good to go. Thrust was extremely tight, so it was loosened up a bit. I talked to Mark at Probe and he made me some custom slugs with tool steel pins. It's ready to go back together, I just need to order rings, rod bearings and headgaskets and put it back together.

I also dropped my head off to Mike at Dayton Performance and he checked it out for me and cleaned up the exhaust valve and seat for me on one of the cylinders, the others were fine and good to go, so I dodged a bullet there. So thanks Mike, I really appreciate you getting it done so fast too!

Man that would be great. I don't have a good camera, so all of mine are just cell phone pics. I'm ready too, I'm going to start leaving work at around 4:00-4:30 on thursdays for test and tune session. Need to get as many passes in as possible to dial in the suspension.

Started playing with the new pistons and pins and man are these .225 wall pins heavy! I don't have an average yet but the the first piston was much lighter than the old ones but the pin puts it about 11 grams heavier. Tomorrow I'm going to mark all their weights and each pins weight. It's looking like the assembly is going to need rebalanced unfortunately but at least it will be right.

Dropped the Engine in a few nights ago but didn't fire it up until this morning. I pushed it out to give it its first wash of the year and made a little idle vid. It's got a different cam and more compression. I fix some hotside leaks that I found when it was apart, so I'm fairly excited to get it to the track.

Last couple of things got finished up tonight. Greg came out last week and we installed the DS safety loop, a new Deka Intimidator battery, put new carpet in it and I changed some wiring. Tonight he came out again and helped me finish up the install of the new seatbelts and I went through the valves again. The car is basically finished. Just need to do some mild street tuning, possibly a little dyno tweaking and make some passes. I can tell you that with the hotside leaks fixed and the new cam, it feels damn good. Noticeable change in low end power too.
I plan to weigh it in the morning, just to get an idea of how big a pig it is.

Well guys, I asked a couple of months ago, as to whether or not you guys were burnt out on buildups yet, and everyone seemed as though they were ready for more. I'll start by saying that several yrs ago I had a nice 90 coupe that I loved. My daughter was born in 98 and money began to get really tight when her mother and I split up. I struggled for a couple more yrs trying to finish the car and see it come to completion. The combo then was a 408 stroker with eagle internals, fox lake ported TW heads and a custom cam from Comp, an efi spyder and all the rest of the goodies. The car ran great, but was in need of a tune, sort of uncommon at the time and autologic was about the only guy on the seen. I finally got to the point where it just had to go, and I sold to a guy I used to work with for 10k, which was exactly how much debt I was in. I obviously took a huge loss on the car, but what I did get out of it, was a plan for the future. I've had time to research, plan and do a little wheeling and dealing to find the parts I need to build the car I want this go around. Unlike the first car that was setup for drag racing only, this car is a compromise between power, streetability and creature comforts. Of coarse this is subject to interpretation, what's considered streetable to one guy, is the worst thing on the planet to another. That being said, the things I've been willing to give up are air conditioning, power steering and power brakes. I'll continue to have power windows/locks, a stereo and even that damned old carpet padding thats probably adding 20#'s to the car. Ok, I'll shut up for now, and start off with a couple of pictures of what I'm working with. If you have any questions, feel free to ask, I believe in full disclosure.:D

Over 8 years, 8 years and its all coming together! Im positive you are excited to get this out and Im sure I speak for others when I say...

CONGRATULATIONS!!!

Its been a pleasure to follow along in this build and Im truly thrilled that its complete! (well for now)

I appreciate it guys and Craig, thanks for that offer, that's really cool. I'll let you know whether or not I need to take you up on that.

Hard to believe it's been 8 yrs but a lot has happened in that time. I got married, bought a house, got custody of my daughter, started a business and then my health took a dump on me. It's been interesting to say the least.

I hope to enjoy the rest of the summer with the car and move on to the jet boat finally. I'm pretty certain I need a bit of a hobby change for awhile, lol.

Great build! Car came out great! It's been a lot of fun helping out where I can. Things went really well this past week or so, I think your onto something with the changes you made to the combo this year, it wasn't a slug or anything by any means before, but you can really feel a difference in the way it makes power now. Get that biotch on a dyno soon! Can't wait for you to get it to the track and start working on the "lists"! :bigthumb

Huge thanks to Mike = NXCOUPE for lending me his dyno today. I just wanted to verify the timing and make sure it was safe at part throttle and WOT with the new cam and extra compression. Mike suggested bringing the meth in a little sooner and the car responded well. I still haven't put any timing in it to account for the meth but you can't complain about consistent 125 degree IAT readings at the end of a pull.

I'm curious about how it will mph at the track, that will be the tell all. Come on Thursday!

After taking a break from the car over the winter, I decided to get back on it and make some changes. I'm in the process of switching over to LS coils, which means a cam sync and crank trigger. Also I'm going to use the C02 control, add 2 knock sensors, a Holley 1000cc meth solenoid and a flex fuel sensor for E85.

I got to looking at my datalog from my 139 mph pass at edgewater, the top line of the graph speaks for itself. I'm really looking forward to this season and turning it up on E!

If this thread hasn't already run it's coarse, I'm thinking about updating some of the changes I listed a few posts up. I have everything I need to put the car back together. I tore the engine down to a short block last night. There's lots of wiring to do, so hopefully that doesn't take too long. I bought all the Holley harnesses I needed to make it go as smooth as possible. Oh, I also bought the new Holley 7"dash and ordered the Florida 50 Holley dash cluster. Hey guys, couple of changes slowly coming along.

This is an explorer cam sync body, a V6 oil pump drive shaft and a custom spacer. All that to make factory parts work on a 9.5 deck block.

http://i121.photobucket.com/albums/o238/Rick88coupe/Mobile%20Uploads/1478487657_zpsllvo0da2.jpg (http://s121.photobucket.com/user/Rick88coupe/media/Mobile%20Uploads/1478487657_zpsllvo0da2.jpg.html)

This is a crank trigger bracket that I had made, to work with a 60-2 wheel. My damper has the built in pulley spacer, so I had to have the wheel made as well.

Just needs trimmed up a little and drilled for bolts/thread motor plate for the bolts. Painted the mounts black while it was apart, I think it looks a lot better now.

Lastly, Chad393 hooked me up with a set of LS coils he had laying around. I mounted them up this afternoon.

I had to order a cam sync, so It's running in batch fire right now, off just a crank signal. I don't think she likes trying to operate the 160# injectors, bank to bank. It sure did clean up the engine bay though. I Just borrowed the plug wires from the 5.3 in the corner, I'll have to order some better ones before long.

Cool! What happened with the cam synch that you had to order one?

The factory explorer cam sync is a 3 wire hall effect sensor, which is a great drop in for guys who have a 8.2 deck block. The work around for guys with a 9.5 block, is to disassemble the body of the explorer cam sync and install the shaft that came out of a v6. For some odd reason it has the same oil pump drive as the 351. The reluctor that the sensor gets its reading from, is part of the oil pump drive shaft and they aren't the same. V6 shaft is setup to use a 2 wire VR sensor and they are more susceptible to noise and have to be tuned in the software for various engine running conditions. Price Motorsports sells a new unit for lots of different engine combinations that uses the 3 wire hall effect and they are pretty much immune to noise. It's just one less thing to worry about.

NXcoupe
11-13-2016, 11:38 PM
I have to look but I have both 2 wire and 3 wire v6 sensors, the three wire won't work?

Rick93coupe
11-13-2016, 11:56 PM
Take them both apart and you'll see why they are incompatible. I don't know what I did with the explorer shaft, so I cant take a comparison picture. The 3 wire sensor has a narrow slot the reluctor passes through, the V6 reluctor is thicker and doesn't fit.

I also finally plumbed in my flex fuel sensor.

I finally wired and plumbed my boost control solenoids, so I'll have full C02 control this year.

I also added 2 knock sensors which I may have mentioned before and picked up an a/w intercooler. I'm waiting for my buddies tig to get back out of the shop but I should have it buttoned up within the next few weeks. It should be a whole new ballgame this year. (knocking on wood).

I went with firecore wires and titanium boots. Hopefully they last and perform like everyone claims they do. Im surprised you didn't hide your coils. Your car looks great. I like how you kept the interior intact.

Thanks man. The wires sure get rave reviews, so I figure I couldn't go wrong. These are what they call the promod boot, whatever that's supposed to mean. I actually kind of dig the coils being on the valve covers like that. I toyed with the idea of mounting them low and running the wires up but the passengers side has the downpipe snaked through there and it just wouldn't work.
