Got some work done in the garage this weekend.
Getting all this to work together should be fun.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7802/47411706671_4cbb2b6487_b.jpg
Found an old Ford wiring book for the 84 Mustang, so its going to be a huge help.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7865/47411706651_ea9ca8454d_b.jpg
Ill have to figure out the Speed sensor to Tremec, so that the Speedo actually works.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7899/47411706631_699ee6cb1c_b.jpg
I removed the dash so that I could run wires and hook up connectors easier.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7867/47411706491_28e50f3c36_b.jpg
Notice the custom, one off, Hyd clutch pedal assembly.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7841/47411706451_0056130da4_b.jpg
Started running the wires
https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4824/47411706591_326e4fe020_b.jpg
Once I get the ECM mounted, all this will clean up.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7881/47411706391_e2100fcdd8_b.jpg
Mounted the fuse block and re-used a factor grommet & Hole to run the "in Car" wires into the interior.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7806/47411706421_1543071105_b.jpg
After a productive weekend, I now have a list of needed parts to get ordered up. Hopefully that small glimmer, is the light at the end of this tunnel...

Index then maybe? Which is a fixed dial for everybody. Anyway curious about the event and venue. I would like to hear more.
I run dial in races nearly every weekend. They are Not that bad. You just have to be fast on the tree and be consistent. Hit a consistent launch and your shift points. I also enjoy heads up racing. Each has a time and purpose. My favorite is index racing. A good mix of both disciplines.

Seems like that light, down that tunnel, is getting brighter as these productive days continue!
Im waiting on my JLT CAI to arrive so that I can get this buttoned up. Alternator wire needs to be run to the battery, but then under here is done.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7862/46548674325_34cea22c34_b.jpg
Fuel lines and all the other sensors are hooked up and ready to go.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7863/47410921642_8c8ba50857_b.jpg
I had to source a different lower rad hose, but with a little trimming, it worked. Black Magic 3300cfm electric fan has been my go to for all my projects, so hopefully Ill have the same results.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7825/47410921612_4dfc11bf94_b.jpg
ECM mounted down and out of the way.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7905/46548674405_49d1bfc088_b.jpg
Fuel Regulator mounted on the pass side front timing cover.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7925/47410921602_31397b932e_b.jpg
Hopefully Ill have more progress pics as I have more parts coming in later on in the week.

Almost done under here. I still need to run the factory harness to the headlights, turn signals, etc and then tie it into the Ford control pack, but this is a snap shot of how it will look.
https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7905/47514571051_96c7ac7095_k.jpg
Still quite a few things left to do, but its motivating to see more items crossed off.

Still on the fence with the tan in the trunk, but once the connections are made to the battery, its done back here.

However, I was FINALLY able to roll it forward and get to the inside and run some wires! Now it still looks like a Spaghetti factory blew up in the interior, but these lights probably have not been on for 10 years, so Im making progress!

Made some more progress last night!
Brake lights. I have to run the wires to the actual switch, but when I jumped them, the lights came on.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47642724262_1a9bb8c617_k.jpg
Hazard lights blink. I have to replace the Turn Signal Flasher fuse as they were really slow when activated. The Hazards, worked fine thou.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47642724092_f8b9ca16d8_k.jpg
Back up lights. When jumped, the Back up lights came on, so Ill run the wires to the TKO switch and I should be good to go.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47642723992_11d6ebd4ed_k.jpg
Things left to do:
-Wire the Key switch to the 2 wires for the Ford Control Pack
-Wire the 6 wires off the main plug of the FCP to their respective locations
-Mount and wire the Dakota Digital main box (about 12 wires here)
-run the turn signal lights to the DD box
-Wire in the Neutral safety Switch to the FCP harness
-Wire the Back up light sensor
-Find the correct horn connection and wire
-Run wires under carpet and Duct tape them down (I like some extra protection on top of the wires)
-Mount new seat belts
-Install carpet
-Install seats
-Load in a Base tune file
-Fire it up!
It will still need to have a front end alignment, but to hear it actually run, will be Huge!
Thanks for tuning in!

One of those weekends of work where you get a lot done, but it doesnt look like you accomplished anything.
Im 99% sure that Im finished under here. Ill know more once I fire it up.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/33855291398_03b08af11b_b.jpg
I was going to use Dakota Digitals adapter, but I would have lost gauges while tuning. So I decided to use the supplied sensors.
I drilled and tapped the factory water neck (1/8 npt)
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47679347992_c94834e1d6.jpg
and then installed the H2O temp sensor.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/33855291358_abbf8e2c67_b.jpg
The factory oil press sensor is a 1/4 npt, so I had to use an adapter.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47679348092_b4b0526151_b.jpg
The Ford Control Pack does not require an oil pressure reading to run, so I installed the DD sensor in the factory location.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/47679348082_69e5f87f60_b.jpg
Once those wires were run into the interior, it was time to figure out what wires I will need to make it all work together.

I talked to Paul over the weekend and I decided to drag the Coupe up to his house on Saturday. He did a Kick Ass job on his Cobra/Coyote swap and I figured it would be good to have another set of eyes on my Coupe.

Check for continuity from the negative post of the battery to engine ground, and chassis ground. Multimeter should read less than 2 ohms. First place to start if absolutely nothing on the car lights up, cranks, or engages electrically. if infinity add grounding as needed and recheck. Then check voltage at the main bus feed point on the car to chassis ground. Proves out the primary ground and voltage bus circuits. A test light will not suffice for such troubleshooting.

Got a few done on the Mustang this weekend, but also encountered a problem. Seems like the Hyd clutch set-up I had fab'd up isnt working at all. So Ill be calling Wilwood today to figure out if Im using the correct master cylinder or if the TOB wasnt installed correctly. Hopefully its something easy...
I also had the windows tinted 20%. Nothing too dark as I hate dark tinted windows and night driving.

Still fighting the Hyd clutch set-up not working, but I got some answers from Tilton. Seems like SPEC uses a certain style Diaphragm Pressure Plate, NOT like the 90% of the other PPs out there. So I need a different TOB to use on my Hyd Release Bearing.
It looks fine.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48061364001_ab52c51ac2_k.jpg
But here you can see where the TOB was engaging the wrong area of the diaphragm.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48061413058_e2c276a275_k.jpg
Now I just need to figure out how to remove the TOB from the HRB without fugging it up.

Get tags for it.
Get some DOT tires
Front end alignment
Install rear seat belts and rear seat
Data log it so that Ken can finish the tune.
Put some miles on it so that I can go Beat its eyes out at the track!

Thanks! I used SEM paint/dye. You'll want to scrub the panels good with TSP, then go over them with a wax and grease remover, next you'll want to put the adhesion promoter on there and then the paint/dye. It's a little bit of work but the results will be great and it won't chip or peel like the crap we used back in the day. With as nice as this build is I think it'd be worth your time.

Yes. The VCT and DOHC setup eliminates that cammer sound even with larger cams up to a point. With separate exhaust and intake cams on VCT there is no overlap which creates so much of hte cam sound on a conventional pushrod engine or even on a 3V SOHC 4.6 with VCT. However, Ken can create overlap that takes place down low which will give you that fake cam sound. Whay you will notice (I have drien one with that "ghost cam" idle as they call it), that after the car settles to idle there will be a very short delay as VCT on both cams corrects to generate overlap for that cammer sound.
You probably already know this so I'm just yacking to hear myself yack. Don't mean to be sounding like I am trying to teach the teacher. No disrespect intended.

BTW I overthought on the 3V. While it has VCT it is a single cam so overlap will be in effect on those engines. They still have variable cam timing. It dose the same thing as the adjustable cam gears on an old school push rod engine that allows you to reposition cam to crank position giving you fine positioning aside from simply jumping a timing link and hoping that wasn't too much. the DOHC's give more versatility to the same concept. GT500's never had this technology btw in spite of their cam configuration. Sorry for the mistake on the 3V theory. I ran a custom grind Comp cam in my 2005. It was a mild mild that had a light cam sound that sounded best with LT's after I switched to them. Sorry to beat on. I believe in correcting my missed speaking when I realize it. Enjoy that beauty. I hope you'll bring it up and make some passes with the group in spite of Dickhead's proven dickness. Or at least let us know when you plan to run it at KK or TH if you decide to come up.

Still not a lot going on with the car, just driving it and data-logging for Ken. I drove it to work the other day and then met the wife downtown at a wine bar. It RIPS pretty good. Ken finally told me to get him some WOT DLs, so i did a few highway pulls. He told me to keep it under 6000, but man, from 4000 on, it pulls very fast! I "might have" seen 7, but I will neither confirm nor deny that.:D
I think I need to get the matching polished front rims to match the polished rears. The tires on the fronts here, are not DOT anyway, so I would then be 100% legal.

Seems like the pedal comes off the floor, about 1/4'' and the clutch releases. Not a big deal until Im at 7200+ and I cant shift. So I talked with Tilton and he wants me to go to a 7/8 Master.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48592185221_e420993faa_k.jpg
Cam, at Cambo Built, designed this assembly using the Wilwood, reverse pedal. I like having the Hyd set-up, but if this new Master, doesnt do the trick, Ill be swapping my Cable set-up back in.

I like the elephant pattern on the back drop. lol
I have all kinds of "Shop Rags" that the wife has given me over the years. Bed sheets make for great dust covers and ole T-shirts make for great rags.
How do yoh fill the master cylinder? Is it a pain?
Its definitely a 2 person job. The reservoir mounts where the cable comes through the FW and uses the old screw that holds the CLucth cable adjuster piece. When I have to bleed it, I have to un-screw the fastener and hold the reservoir as high as I can get it. Once its all done, I can put back on the FW.
I figured I better come up with a "pedal stop" before I re-install my assembly.
So I did some measuring of how far the pedal swings back.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48623412913_7b0928227d_k.jpg
Went to Lowes and got some 1-1/2 x 3/16 steel and made a pilot hole.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48623412903_2fbc4ea34a_k.jpg
Made it a tad longer so that I could fine tune it.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48623412928_02521d2628_k.jpg
Fugged up and took off too much. Re measured and decided I could just flip what I have.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48623412933_44ef3013aa_k.jpg
Cleaned it up with some acetone
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48623913592_26c34fdb4d_k.jpg
and threw on some paint
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48623766771_6a55eb6f10_k.jpg
Installed a rivet and checked the distance on more time.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48623916592_d8fd391741_k.jpg
Then snapped it off and VIOLA!! A custom Pedal Stop on my custom pedal assembly.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48623416178_55616b7554_k.jpg
I had my neighbor help me bleed the new Master and when I finally got it done, the pedal felt so much better! Im excited for some dry roads so that I can get the Mustang out and about to make sure its working correctly.

Im thinking 10.90s, 10.8's on a great day & prep'd track?? I dunno, but Im looking forward to finding out! :cool1:
So after my outing last Saturday, I decided that the Coupe HAS TO HAVE A 2 STEP. So I made the call to ATECH and ordered one up.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48793041321_090ac0a745_k.jpg
Its pretty much a "plug n play" kinda deal. You un-plug the coil packs, plug the MSD into them, then the original harness into the MSD harness.

https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48793041331_253881b8cc_k.jpg
All finished up under the hood, you cant tell anything was changed.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48792675998_5efa1586a3_k.jpg
Ill just get some 3M 2 sided tape and secure the module here in the glove box.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48793182687_a551553589_k.jpg
I want to use the button on the shifter handle to activate the 2 step, so I had to come up with a switch to activate the Line Lock. The Lever for the AC/DEFROST/HEAT still functions and it depresses the switch.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48792675658_a20151c461_k.jpg
I figured this lil micro-switch would do the trick! I was just hoping it would still work after 30+ years.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48793041246_fc63faab4a_k.jpg
Key on, Lever up, Nothing. Key OFF, Lever Down, Nothing.
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48793182712_88779d2385_k.jpg
Key ON, Lever down, VIOLA!! We have Line Lock engagement! Key off, Lever down, Nothing!
https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/48793182937_683704e888_k.jpg
I didnt have a chance to use the 2 step last night as it was late when I finished up. However, this AM, it Worked!! I set it to 3000 and slowly brought the RPMS up. It hit 3000 and stayed there until I released the button!
Now hopefully I can get the Struts/Shock settings figured out and Blast me a 10 second, NA run!!
Ill be out of town next week, but the following week, Id like to head back to Clay City as their T&T is $20 and they PREP the track! If I get it squared away, Ill be coming up to race with the UMTR on Oct 19th! Yeah Im NO fan of Dick Weinle at all, but my Love for Stick Shift racing overrides my lack of liking him.
See yall soon.

I made the trip up North to race with the UMTR this past Saturday. First past off the trailer, 10.77@126, Bam! Nice solid 10 sec ET! So everything else after that was a bonus for me. I went 4 rounds and raced another Mustang in the Finals! Holy Shit, Im in the Money!! Ole dude chopped the tree down on me an sent me packing to the RUnner up spot. However, I broke out like a stud and went a PB of 10.73@126! Heck, I even came home with $170! So I had a Great night!
Its offical, Im back in the UMTR!

When I built this car, I was hoping for an ET faster than a 11.0. So when I ripped off that 10.59, I was THRILLED!!. I know there is more in it, I just have to get with my chassis guy and see what we can do and get my 60" down.

Fishing well......BWAHHAHA!!!! I hate for a Goldfish to get sucked up and sent through an intercooler.
I have a T56, but I screwed up and got a GM T56. So now I have to decide on what I want to do. Everything is telling me to go with a PG and Boost, but I already have that with the Nova.
I dunno, the Stang is at my Father in laws shop while I tear into the Nova, so its kinda outta site outta mind right now.
redfirepearlgt
12-17-2019, 12:10 PM
I learned something new today. I just assumed a T56 would be a T56 (and so on for trans builders in general) and the bolt pattern they use would have to be adapted to by any maker choosing them.
Have you looked into seeing if a 10R80 could be adapted? That little 4-eye would be really hauling big time with a simple transbrake kit and a nice stall IMHO. Would obviously need an ECU swap. But then you get into all kinds of additional tuning as well. Where as with the PG or any other mech shifted auto its how you set it up mechanically with no additional learning curve or third party tuning involvement.
I just saw where a guy took his 18 GT (or 19 - same same) and went 10.53@ 135 N/A (E-85 and some mods). Car weighed 3500 with him in it. Did it on a 1.5x 60ft as well. 3.55 gear as well. Nothing massively short and on a stock converter with a tune generated transbrake that lets him leave at 3000RPM.
A 10R80 with boost in a fox body? WOW! That wouldl be something to see.

I was going to say a 6R80 and boost but a 10R80 would be cool as well. You could drive the thing anywhere, with decent or even really good mileage, bust some ass and drive it back home. Could be an awesome setup for something like Drag Week. :cool1:

I guy I used to work with would say that when he liked an idea you had, was agreeing with you, or was aknowledging he heard you and would comply. It stuck with me over the years.
Love to see your work. I wish I was 30 years younger so I could go into debt, build a garage, fill it with tools and a lift and enjoy this hobby beyond basic tune-up and bolt ons work, understanding the theory, and driving the car. So I am building a theater room in my basement instead. I at least have the tools for that and the structure already exists.
Hope to see you this spring...and the car!

I decided to change out the rear coil over springs over the weekend. I removed the 150s, installed some 95s, and those bottomed out. So I ended up running some 125s

You running the coil overs in the stock location? What length did you go with?
I always had issues with the ones I had. Either it was to hard, to soft and bounced something horrible, or just sat to low. I ended up going back to a regular spring rather than fighting it at the time.
Im with you! I cant wait till this all clears up and we can get back to living a normal life again. I had the black car out for 10 minutes the other day on back roads just to get over the fever some!

Yes, I ended up running the 12" x 125lb Afco Coil over springs. The car seemed to like the switch, but until the track opens, kinda hard to tell.

One or Both of my daughters dont realize it yet, but they get to help me with the brakes when I get home. Ill even let them Tik Tok while they help.
I was going to install the slicks, but since I have a week to burn some 93, Ill leave the street tires on. Then its time to fill up with E, upload the new tune, hammer around town and if everything feels good, install the slicks!
Yall have a good weekend!

That's not a typical failure. There is something more going on that generated that...extreme sideloading and/or wobble has been induced to cause that failure. The addition of the rotating load of a centri or PD unit isn't going to cause something like this to happen IMHO. After owning FI setups for more than 12 years now I have never seen that happen.
The setup that caused this will tell the full story. .
